What do you think of my pixel art?

svnsvn Member Posts: 445
I decided to use pixel art for my new game. Being a teen, I went the DreamLab method: DIY on a website called Piq. I made three images at http://piq.codeus.net/u/mahadeva
Tell me what you think!

It's been less than an hour.

Seriously, you young 'uns need to learn some bloody patience!

As to the art... well. Compare it to other pixel art yourself.

    What do you think?

To be honest, I can't really tell what the images are supposed to be. You need to have a specific idea of what you are trying to pixel, then spend some time making all the lines nice and clean (not too many pixel blobbed together, it looks untidy and rushed). You also need to think about the colours used, especially if you are working with such a limited number of pixels.

What I would suggest is making small thumbnail sketches on a piece of scrap paper first, then just recreate the line art as pixels. Work on that, get some more critique, then think about colouring.

Sorry, not trying to be purposefully harsh btw, just trying to give you some genuine feedback.

    Cheers

OK, thanks. All right... work on lines, huh? I guess my work looked untidy, it's my first attempt. The program I'm working with has three sizes: large pixels, medium pixels, and small pixels. The smaller the pixel, the more detail. I did all of that stuff in LARGE size. Maybe I should work small?

There's no need to be defensive, I'm not having a go. You asked for thoughts, and I gave them. If you are going to get upset by peoples impressions of your work, I'd recommend not putting your "first attempt" on display.

What I'd suggest is, working with the largest pixels possible until you are more skilled and confident. If you work with smaller pixels without thinking about the things I mentioned it will just look messier.

Like I said, I'd try drawing out on paper some rough ideas first. Then try copying a concrete design into pixels, but just the outlines. Work on these, get critiques, acknowledge where you need to tighten up the drawing, do it. Then get onto colouring. But like they say, don't try to run before you can walk. Practice, practice, practice!

Oh no. Did I sound defensive? Well, I don't want to. Criticism is appreciated.

To those of you who vote, if you kindly would, explain your choice.

Alright so I voted for the first.
The best way to do this is draw pictures more detailed (on paper for example). Then go to less detailed untill the point where it doesn't look good any more.
What I am trying to say is draw with only the details needed to make clear what it represents. It's a fine line but with practice you will get there.

I used to be a cartographer and this is a
Close art form. Small maps have less detail but it is importand it is still clear what the country is you are drawing.

Jeep practicing. It looks pretty good already!

Does it? Could you figure out what they were just by looking? That's what I'm going for.

    keep trying...

Its a really satisfying art style...

If you haven't go and check out Sword and Sorcery on the iPhone or iPad... its a stunning game made up entirely of pixel art. Think it got called 'THE' game to go and buy an iPad for at some point. Very cool pixel art done in a very stylised way... The actual game play is cool as well...and the audio... and err... yeah everything.

Also obviously check out my one step into pixel art...I ended up using photoshop with some setting tweaked to do the pixel art as its software I know pretty well.

Yeah, I heard about Sword and Sworcery. It does look cool. Maybe I'll try that style in another game. But my dad won't let me buy any iPad games more expensive than FREE.

Can I see what it is by looking at it?
Read my story again and ask a new question ;)

Hi svn, I think your pixel art images are a decent start to the world of pixel art; although be aware that you have a long way to go. For instance, here's a link to some state-of the-art pixel art. I'm not trying to make your heart sink, just hopefully let you see that pixel graphics - if done properly - are some of the most difficult graphics to produce.

Here's a couple of links for pixel art tutorials; there's more if you google the term.

Best of luck with your pixel art. :-)
