★★★ Got a 3DS but have mixed feelings ★★★

Since the price dropped to £115 (Tesco's) i couldn't resist picking up a 3DS.

I picked up Zelda and a second hand copy of Pilot Wings and Street Fighter.

The 3d effect is great but move your head ever so slightly and you lose focus...Pilot Wings seems to suffer more than Street Fighter with Zelda laying somewhere in between.

I also found having the 3d slider half way suits me better but after an hour playing Zelda last night i was in 2d mode by the end.

After reading about the bad design with the top screen scratching via bottom surround when closed i always make sure there's a cloth in between screen when closing.

I got a black one after buying the last blue one in stock only to find a dead pixel or 2 and returning.

It marks up like crazy and it seems you only have to look at the thing and you need to wipe it.

The lid when fully opened feels flimsy with too much give.

Don't get me wrong it's a great piece of kit but i would of thought the big N would of made it a little more solid and the design flaw mentioned above is unforgivable.

Zelda rocks and I'm having a blast it's just i feel i need to look after it like a 2 week old baby wiping its arse every 2 minutes and being extra careful when handling :)

Darren.

I'm enjoying mine and love anything nintendo does. But I am finding that the iPhone gets about 100 times more game playing time than the 3DS. It just doesn't seem that convenient to get it out to play when it's not in my pocket. What have we become?

Seems like the original DS, which was original ugly and flimsy but iterated upon until it was very stylish.

Personally I don't see a need for handheld consoles anymore because my iPod Touch fills that role perfectly. Games on my iPod are also cheaper, and in the case of something like Infinity Blade better looking.

I like Nintendo for creating games like Mario Kart, but to be honest I never liked the DS series. After the cut in price I'll catch a 3DS for the holidays, but only for Mario Kart 7. Like someone said before, my iPod Touch is much more important to me right now.
I'm looking forward to buying a Wii U next year, but I don't know what happens if Apple upgrades the Apple TV. ;-)

I think they should integreate a console platform with Apple TV, and let us make games for it.

I didn't get one, but I have had the chance to use one, and it works the way all 3d things do: I can see the difference between 3d and 2d, but not that much. I think It's since I've been perceiving 3d with games um... with a Z axis but not in 3d, so when it actually became 3d, it wasn't that dramatic of a change. The game I'm looking forward to getting a chance to play is Paper Mario 3d. With this game, I can only imagine the whole game being as cool as the credits of a 3d movie (which are totally rad) but with more jumping and such. Also, I'm waiting for more original titles, not juist revivals of 64 games, no matter how happy I was to see motherflippin' Ocarina of Time in 3d. Also, Star Fox 64, but to a lesser extent. But maybe with some puzzle games or something, the 3d will be better used. I don't think this consol has reached its full potential. I'm waiting for the next version to come out so I can either buy the new and improved version, or the older one with a new and improved price. Or neither. That's another possibility.

I tried one at Gamestation, and the screen is too small for me, the 3D effect has too limited viewing angle, and it started strain my eyes almost instantly, so one of the biggest selling point seem to be their weakest link.

But even if I look past that, the biggest issue for me is the £40 price tag on new retail releases, it's just way too expensive for a handheld game.

Hey Darren, congrats on getting a 3DS! I personally love mine, and although it doesn't get nearly as much play time as my iPhone, I look forward to Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D, Luigi's Mansion and Paper Mario. I personally tested those at E3, and they are gorgeous, and defo worth the purchase of the system.

My personal gripe is I wish they had some of those titles at launch, especially Mario Kart :(

Pilotwings does have a narrow viewing perspective, and is probably the worst offender of the 3D screen. I can't imagine a kid playing that, and sitting that still in order to view the 3D perspective of the game.

Having said that, the 3DS shop is probably the best part of the system now! You should check out some of the games on there, and play those until better ones launch. They have Zelda, Kirby, Super Mario Land, and a few other classics, and have more to come, including some additional gameboy stuff, and GBA games :)

I remember the original DS being a clunky mess too, and even issues with the hinges breaking off. I personally think this is a pretty good attempt at a first gen 3DS in comparison to past releases!

I think the biggest gripe for people is the terrible battery life. About 5 hours in total. I don't play it enough to wear it down, but I'm sure it will become frustrating with future game releases!

Love mine, and I was on Zelda for about 5 hours yesterday :D

Looking forward particularly to Animal Crossing - perfect for a handheld I think!

The price drop is enticing but I keep telling myself that I basically have not touched by DSi since I got my iPhone.

I wish Nintendo would put their classic NES/SNES games on iOS. I can understand not wanting to make new Mario/Zelda/etc. games for iOS as that would probably take customers away from their hardware but classic NES/SNES games would be big hits I think. All the hard work was done when they were originally made. They just need to be ported. It's like printing money.

I want Banjo Kazooie :) but since the developers are working for Microsoft i doubt that's going to happen.

Bring back Rare to Nintendo... they used to be my favourite developers...conkers bad fur day, goldeneye, banjo all great games on the old N64.

@QS: Thanks for reminding me about Animal Crossing! That's also at the top of my list! :D

@Darren: N64 had some great stuff, I hope they bring back more titles besides a paper mario game, maybe mischief makers, even Yoshi's story was kinda' fun :)

    Darren.

I couldn't agree more! The best thing to come out of Rare since the move to Microsoft is Viva Pinata, which was marketed towards children but way too complex for the young ones if you ask me.

Now they have been banished to the basement level of Microsoft to work on Kinect games. Not too happy about that.

As far as the 3DS, I'm not touching the thing until Paper Mario comes out.

I gave street fighter an hour last night and wow i was very impressed with the online set up.

Easy and quick to join a game and the gameplay was very fast and smooth even with an average internet connection.

I got my ass handed back to me more than i liked but i will get better:) won about 2/30 fights.

Yeah i reckon I'm going to enjoy the 3DS.
