WOW it was slow here too (UK) but nothing like that, (maybe 10-15 seconds for the main page), from other comments you have made I have a feeling your connection is very slow.

Hi Stu, appreciate your help.
Here in the UK, my pages load almost instantly, though I can't remember if they were slower the first time, and so subsequently, after they're cached, only then do they load faster. Perhaps that's what happened when Rob tried. Could you try loading a second time please and see if it's faster? And can you confirm that you're not using the prefix w w w? This website is loading slower here with that; my host has just emailed me back saying there should be no difference in loading time, so I've emailed him to say, well, there is.
I still haven't got round to buying the Rage software you recommended for optimization, but it seems I'll definitely need to... They've also got a neat piece of software for tags, etc., that I've yet to use.
I emailed the host about the javascript stuff, as well as they're international bandwidth and awaiting a reply.
I guess it's early days yet re: optimization; still, it's taken the shine off of my excitement at having a new website...
Anyone else having problems loading? (Or no problems, I guess if you're in the UK?)
Yep, with the www it takes minutes to load. Without it took about a few seconds, although I think this is still cached.
However I just clicked through a link to an app and it again takes at least 20-30 seconds to load, even without the www. Clicked the next button and it is still loading now as I'm writing.
I doubt they'll do anything with the redundant javascript as that is part of the html made by iweb, I assume it was part of the theme you originally used to give it extra features. You could always edit the html in a text editor as plain text and delete it, backup it up first though. Then try uploading that to the ftp and see if it's any different.
photostrip.png is still a png !! and at 650k+ that is all that is slowing you down now. (it should go down to about 25k and still look ok).
I would get some speed tests from a few other people before you start throwing money at software (the image optimisation side you really don't need to pay for and on a small site your code would have to be pretty badly scrambled for a decent broadband connection to be able to tell the difference)
there are still more images that are pngs it seems...
various pngs called shapeimage_2 !!

Hi Stu: Thanks for your advice. I'll try the Rage optimization software first, I think before I plunge in to edit the html... my expertise there is quite limited. (EDIT: as I wrote to Rob below, I think I might redo the site from scratch...)
When you say you clicked a link to an app, I guess you mean a link to a blog (news) article? It's instant again here, (well, a quarter of a second...). I don't know what to think now.... maybe more light will be shed when I hear back from the host with reference to their international bandwidth. And why, with w w w , it takes so long, when they say it shouldn't....
Hi Rob, yes I've yet to replace all the pngs. I'll do that sometime today or tomorrow. But come to think of it, photostrip.png might be the first file I used before resizing, then replacing (I only use photostripa, b, c and d in this instanc)e. So it should be redundant (but why it wasn't deleted from the package when I deleted it from the web page, I don't know). I'll check it out, anyhow. Thanks for pointing it out.

Understood Rob, thanks. i'm seriously thinking starting it from scratch in iWeb; based on my existing design and with all the resources, it shouldn't take any more than a couple of hours, hopefully. i'll see what goes then –– sounds like there could be more redundant stuff lurking..
Wow, thats a really cool artistic website. How many web designers did you bribe? Just kidding. But anyway, I really like the whole style. The only issue is, as everyone else mentions is the loading time for the images. But otherwise, this is awesome!

Thank you very much, Rumi. :-) I'll be building the website again from scratch in iWeb sometime soon and hopefully it'll be better optimised then and load faster.

Anyone else who's not seen my new website like to take a look? Am I getting on people's nerves with this thread keep popping up? If I butter a piece of toast and drop it, why does it always land butter-side down? Who invented the umbrella?

Hi, I've added another page to my website, the equivalent of a book cover, if you like, just a straightforward but (hopefully) nice intro before going to the welcome page.
Edit: for some reason, it's not going to the new first page, but maybe someone can still answer my question further down. I'll get onto it straight away and see if I can sort it soon, i.e have this new page load first).
edit again: for some reason, the new first page only loads when the web address is appended by the word website, i.e http://davidgriffinauthor.co.uk/website/ Any one know what needs to be tweaked so that this new page is first, just by clicking the norma address?
(By the way, I still haven't replaced pngs with jpegs yet, but I will, soon.... I seem to remember saying that two days ago.... ;-) so it won't load all that fast at the moment).
A question for any of you guys experienced with optimisation/meta tags for websites:
As iWeb hasn't got the capabilities for adding meta tags, I'm going to use a piece of software by Rage software called iWeb SEO tool. I haven't really got my head around this yet, but I wondered: if I put lots of meta tags linked with the first page, which are relevant to all of the website apart from this first page, would it work? I don't know if I'm explaining myself enough... try again...
Do meta tags need to apply to each individual page of a website, or can you put all meta tags relevant to the whole of the website on the first page? (I read that google bots, for instance, scan pages and if the words for the meta tags aren't on the page, they reject it, or something)........ maybe I've just answered my own question....

Sites looking nice mate, does seem a bit slow but i know nothing about optimising websites so cant offer any advice! D'oh.
As for the question about toast, i think i know the answer to that. When you butter the bread, you slightly indent it and its that convex (or concave, not sure what 1 and cant be bothered to google) that usually causes the toast to land that side down.

Thanks, beefy; and no probs! I must get around to replacing those pngs...

Excellent answer!! Weight distribution, eh? As for who invented the umbrella, I can't sleep through not knowing... ;-)

No worries, anyone, about answers to my question about website meta tags; I should learn about them myself, I know.
As for the new first page not showing, well, for some unknown reason, it's "cured" itself.
So if you'd like to see this new first page – the equivalent of a book cover, sort of – please check out the revised website below.
Are the strips meant to be clickable cos at the moment tis only the little vertical welcome on the right...and one other thing PPPPPPng )))

Rob2 said: Are the strips meant to be clickable cos at the moment tis only the little vertical welcome on the right...
Hi Rob, the strips aren't clickable, just the welcome type button works, that's right. As I say, i wanted the equivalent of a book cover, sort of a formal first page... I want to guide people onto the welcome page where only then they can find their way around the (not that large) site.

Looking into your pages source it looks to be loading a ton of crappy javascript that is not used in the page.

For certain, my surreal interactive "journey" app (due -optimistically speaking - in spring next year) will contain a lot of graphic design aspects.
Would anyone else like to take a look at my new website?
