Experience with paid advertising

Hey all, I have recently released my first game and am experimenting with some paid advertising (amongst other marketing strategies). I don't have much of a budget at this stage, but am taking out a few small web ads. My question is to other devs that have done this - did you find much of a difference in sales or exposure for your game?

Here is my web ad btw, feedback would be great!

Its a waste of money. The Best advertising is free app reviews. Anything else is money in the trash IMO

Thanks for the advice mate :) Well I'm glad I just started with a few cheap ads to test the waters then. I am not too worried at this stage as I only spent about $50 in total, so if I don't make a single sale from it, it's not the end of the world.

I did send out about a million emails asking for reviews, and so far some have replied saying they'll write reviews, so that should be good. One thing I did notice, if I mentioned in the review request that I was considering advertising (which I honestly was) some people seemed to fall over themselves to keep me happy by promising a review... So maybe that is one upside to advertising ;p

hi, prmac has been recommended by some of the members here; worth checking out for getting out a press release. Some review sites won't consider reviewing without a press release anyway.

Ah Yes definitely Check that out. Sorry I don't see that as paid advertising so I forgot to mention it. It works a bit different. with prmac.com you are paying for your information to be advertised to the people who may turn around and advertise for you for free with a review or at the minimum posting your press release.

And its cheaper than most an advertising option out there.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll definitely look into prmac :) I have a press release ready so that should be pretty easy.I suppose I am using my first (very simple) game as a marketing test run so I can market my future games quickly and effectively. Please feel free to share any other good and bad marketing experiences, and I will definitely do the same once I start to get to get some feedback. Marketing seems to be just as much work as developing! ;p

As for the few web ads I placed, I am already starting to see some click-throughs in the first hour, so hopefully some of those will convert into sales.
