There has been a couple of thing like this before but not by Wacom (who are the the tops when it comes to tablets). If it works it may change my work patterns, but it will probably be one of those things that has to be tried and got used to for more than a few minutes in a store to see if it does (unless it works so well that it is obvious). I really hope that it does. It will still not offer shading with the same sensitivity as physical tool such as pencils and pens, but for many things it could be fab. So I've signed up for the release date and will order one as soon as it's out.
The downside seem to be that is has to be within line of sight of the base station so its not a case of putting the pen in your pocket and then dumping an drawing you've done during the day... This would be very cool- to be able just to take the pen everywhere and then be able to 'dump your doodles'.... instead you have to drag the base station part around and clip it to whatever it is you want to draw on.
