Sadly I also didn't receive an email. Unfortunate for those who haven't as there are so many good contenders. However congratulations to those who have heard.

You're not alone in that feeling....

I don't think (hope) they've already choose the finalist, mainly because many of the game on your list were almost sure finalist.

I think they had some kind of problems preventing them to give us some news about it.

I have not heard anything yet either. it would be nice to hear either way for two reasons: 1) my mother asks whether I've heard anything every 5 minutes, and 2) it would be nice to know whether or not I need to buy a plane ticket...

    EDIT: Good timing, Joe :D

@ FMG: haha I'm on the same situation as your first point.

It reminds me when I had my first app on the App Store: I was frantically checking Applyzer every ten minutes to see the rankings

To add to your list I've not heard anything either - but to be honest I think with the big push on 0.8.2 for the GS team and maybe a judge not getting their feedback in time that its just a case that the finalists will get an email and be announced Monday for now let the GS team get their well earned sleep.
  • MarkOnTheIronMarkOnTheIron Member Posts: 1,447
It's about 15:20 for them (I think) so I don't think they will sleep for a while :-)

But I agree with you that they would have said something if they had the possibility. I think they had some kind of problem preventing them to get in touch with us
  • JCFordJCFord Member Posts: 785
Yes but if they've been working through the night to get the 0.81 and then 0.82 fixes out to us, I'm sure they will be having the weekend off to catch up on sleep.

So, who would care to start a little internal voting? Let's hear your own picks for the finalists – go!

Unfortunately, they are not all playable. Several crash my browser. But I'm in agreement with your selections, with a few possible alternates in mind. And thanks for the vote! Here are mine (copy/paste):

    Stunt Squirrels - firemaplegames
    Labyrinth Deluxe - tshirtbooth
    Kill The King - eastbound
    Fireflight - Valan
    Orbots Attack - HugeGraphics : )

Spellcaster also has a ton of elements in it, but I can't figure out how to play it on the web. And there are a few that are similar-style games that are neck-and-neck with each other.

The hard part of this is that the seasoned programmers will obviously have superior code and more in-depth functionality, but the graphics guys catch your eye first. It's a tough call to make, but I guess selling $1 apps on iTunes is all about those first impressions, right? (Says the graphics guy....)

We should first sort them by US and international but many users haven't specified a location.
    Here's mine:

    Stunt Squirrels - firemaplegames
    Labyrinth Deluxe - tshirtbooth
    Kill The King - eastbound
    Traffic Ninja - crazybreadman
    A Plinky Game! - maralfer :)

Ya, I think I knocked myself out of the running. I was trying to think outside the box and come up with a cool iPhone game. Of course, after I submitted it, I didn't realize they were going to judge it on "web play."

Unless you're using a tablet or a touchscreen, most people will find it impossible to use their mouse to draw the pattern of the spell fast enough to build it, then press the name when it's at its peak, then press the CAST button at the right time to throw the spell at full accuracy.

It's really a game to be played on the device.
  • HugeGraphicsHugeGraphics Member Posts: 81
Understood. We have a similar issue with Orbots Attack – it's just not fun unless you play it on the iPhone because it's a TILT game! We had to pull a web version out of our rear at the last minute. So we'll look forward to playing Spellcaster on iPhone, then. : )

    How about your votes?

Nothing from either of my entries. Wrong Way Rage or Detonate!, but it sounds like no one has heard anything yet.

Same here for my Fly demo. The thing is, mine's a demo of an "idea", whereas most of the entries here a finished games. I figured the software wasn't finished so it wouldn't matter if my game wasn't lol!
As far as voting goes, I find that extremely difficult because they each have their own merits. I am amazed at the ingenuity people have shown with their ideas. All quite brilliant!

I'll probably go back to my iPhone version which has smaller backgrounds due to perfornance issues. That will then replace my current web version. Originally I was considering a superhero fly and decided it was too complicated and came to the idea of making him a stunt fly ..... Only to then see Stunt Squirrels after I'd already named my app at the Apple dev site :-). That can happen though. At least our games are completely different and similar in title only (sorry firemaplegames).
    See you all later!

Good luck all anyway and competition or not, continue to make great games and keep pushing the limits of the software and our imaginations!
  • HugeGraphicsHugeGraphics Member Posts: 81
Good post, Mike. I'll second the camaraderie in that, and underline it with reassurance I only wanted us to vote for each other for fun! So I hope no one is offended. It's possible to have the ugliest yet best performing game in this situation, so I was interested to hear people talk about what didn't get noticed. I bet each of us has something that would raise the eyebrows of the other!

Hey, everyone should try this site to squeeze your backgrounds and definitely anything using transparency (24-bit PNG's): http://www.gracepointafterfive.com/punypng

I ran all of our stuff through there and saved an additional 34% in file size. We animated a lot of things, so it was a huge help.
  • QuinnZoneStudiosQuinnZoneStudios Member Posts: 452
Cool, I'll check that out. I know I reduced mine significantly by using "save for web" png in Photoshop. Of course you have the option to save with transparency or not depending upon the graphic. All great stuff!
  • HugeGraphicsHugeGraphics Member Posts: 81
Goes beyond Save for Web... Do that first, then upload for even more compression. It's lossless, gains are in metadata and stuff like that I think.
