So the latest iPhone 5 rumours are that it will have a 4" display. Obviously this will likely break everyone's art assets, so I just thought I would open up discussion about what everyone thinks about it.

Does anyone with a better mathematical mind know the conversion you would need to do to increase the size proportionally up to a 4" display, a simple increase in % size that you could do in Photoshop for example?

Yeah - def same resolution - the current iPhone4 screen is of a higher resolution than the eye can actually see.... so ample opportunity to keep same no. of horizontal and vertical pixels, but to maintain a high resolution.... so the dpi would change but the screen would remain 960 x 640 pixels.

Of more of a concern is a retina iPad rumoured sometime in the near future.... I imagine they'll double up the resolution again - that'll mean LARGE image files...

Highly unlikely , but even if they do it the screen resolution will still stay the same , and still be retina , the current retina lcd is BEYOND retina, 4" display with 960x640 is still retina ..

    So its gonna be fine.

This is all good to know.

Here is where I got the story from:

BTW, TShirtBooth, there is no way Apple will be going 3D with anything in the foreseeable future. 3D movie sales are down, 3D TV sales aren't going up, and it is a very un-apple like gimmick.

I doubt Apple will do anything 3D too, very gimmicky, and not up to par... unless they can do 3D without glasses, much like the 3DS, I don't think it's worth it..

BUT, does anyone know if Apple will be making their own TV's in the near future?

The people on 5by5 (very good Mac slanted tech podcast site) seem to think that Apple changing the way we use TVs and such will be their next product line. But it may not be soon because the networks have too much power.

All separate iPhone 5 stories do point to a larger screen but possibly 3.7" rather than 4" so they can keep Retina display quality. (Possible were going to get 2 models, a revised cheaper iPhone 4 and all new iPhone 5.)

Theres a decent Roundup here: http://gizmodo.com/5836942/the-iphone-5-rumor-roundup-redux - All the iPhone 5 cases being made in Asia support a larger screen.

From what i've read theres about a 80% we'll get a bigger screen. Apple don't care about us having to do new images, they have to stay ahead of the game or at least stay in it and all the top Android phones have bigger screens. Again its all rumours but I'd be more surprised if the new handset didn't get bigger than if it stayed the same.

Well if the iphone 5 does have a larger screen I think "hope" it will be at the same proportions, and if its still retina then we should be fine. One thing to note, and im not sure this matters to GS games and the resolution independence setting, but when apple added the retina display to the iphone lineup, all you had to do is add the PNG's to your project (xcode project not GS game) with the same names and add "@2x" to the end of the image name. So you would have "image1.png" and "image1@2x.png". That's it, and the device would load the larger images if on a retina display or the normal assets if not, no code needed.
