icon size confusion

Can someone help me understand the icon size process for uploading to the appstore.
I thought you had to have a 512x512 for the store page and then a 72x72 for the actual device icon and each could be different.
When you register the app, you select the 512x512 which I believe is the store icon.
As I understand it, you create a 512x512 for gamesalad and it will shrink it down to the 72x72 device icon but not over write the one you already have uploaded in your developer account.
Is that how that works and if not how does it work?
Thanks!
