Damn it! Great exposure for Zanda on one of the biggest industry online magazines and it's bloody top adult entertainment (or whoever they are) that get the credit!

I really like DBA's templates, but this is sad:( And it can be so easily solved: watermarked images.

    Wow...

I spent months building a game (BOT) that's in the same genre as Zelda... and a lot of people acted like l killed the family pet. I'm not aware of ANY gaming sites that covered it.

Although, do I really want coverage like this...

I think I should write an email to Gamasutra about this. Maybe they missed the last paragraph of the article that they linked to.

Yeah, it's insane... wonder how many of these will pop up in the app store.

I'm confused about somethings things here...

1 - If I bought the template, am I allowed to use the images?
2 - If so, why not actually build a full game with the template?
3 - Why does Darren release these templates and not full games?

Bumps made tens of thousands of dollars... right? Is there really that much money in templates?

According to Darren your aloud to use everything in the template however you want. You get all art sounds ect...

Darren's templates come with everything, artwork music and more. You are allowed to use the images.

I think some people do buy the templates with the intention of expanding the game, but what's the point when you have people like this who just buy, compile and submit hoping to make $100 with no work at all.

Ahh Photics! You are confused because you think like a game maker not an dodgy accountant. You would never have made the grade at Lehman or Enron. Back to your computer!

I know Darren and Wayne include the graphics with all their templates (probably so you can see what each actor is for), but I seriously don't understand why they just don't watermark their images. Its not hard to do, and it would eliminate this issue. I've purchased a couple of DBA's templates recently because they fit into some ideas I had for some new apps. However, the first thing I'm going to do is replace ALL of the graphics and add a completely different theme. This is what people who buy templates are supposed to do, and if images are watermarked, they will have no choice.

As i said in the other thread we will watermark our images from now on because this has gone way too far.

99% of users do change art and add to the templates but it's the 1% we must protect from.

    Darren.

I don't think anyone expected this to skyrocket the way it did... I for one did not... and I made the art and came up with the title for the template... It was fun doing - and that's the main reason we did the template.... Making it into a full game is a huge task when trying to make a RPG and even more so when trying to get close to a Zelda like gameplay... With other project in the pipeline at the moment we just wanted to show that it's possible to make something that resembles a professional RPG with Gamesalad... It was a proof of concept and meant to be used as a learning tutorial...

In hindsight - yes - we should have watermarked the art... but honestly... if I create the art for a tutorial in a day [like Zanda] or in a few hours [like the towerdefense or racerz template] I don't consider the art being that good or that valuable that it needs protecting... It's more the fun aspect that keeps me illustrating Darren's templates...

To see this 'app' getting through apples quality control is the biggest surprise to me... and it's gotten through twice now (with 'Zanda') also in the app store as of today... We are flabbergasted by apple and the odacity of some 'developers' to publish a template without changes...
It's wrong to put the blame on templates looking too good - they are meant to look good to raise the bar, motivate the developers, push the limits of gamesalad... Nevertheless will we take action and make sure that those 'developers' that put a template straight into the store will have a harder time from now on... but I feel that apple is to blame for their normaly so painfully and anal quality controls which seem to fail in so many cases now and Gamesalad for not monitoring the apps that are being created to keep the brand 'Gamesalad' in a positive light and not allow certain apps to go through... In the case of 'Zanda' Gamesalad knew about the template from early videos and imho it would have been an ideal showcase app to push the limits of Gamesalad and show the world that you can create great games with this tool... Sadly there was no interest on their part to support a project and get something stunning funded...

Neither Darren, Wayne nor myself can fund a 6 - 8 months development cycle to create even a small to medium RPG based on the 'Zanda' idea... Hence the publishing of a template instead of a full game...

How are you gonna blame gamesalad. It is partly apples fault by you guys are responsible as well. Its not like this is the first template thats been published.

Gamesalad could monitor all apps created with Gamesalad as they have to go through their server... I am not saying they should but they could... If I wanted to keep my brand name clean and shiny I would go that way and enforce quality control... A control that in apples case failed miserably... but at least they are / were trying to keep the app store from becoming a complete swamp...

They have said countless times they will be watermarking templates from now on, they have explained why they are making templates, lets leave it at that. The guys are doing a great job at providing decent templates that soo many people find useful. Keep up the good work guys and i welcome the watermarking with open arms!

Well, no. The horse is already dead. Unless the horse, too, is a zombie, in which case it is a dead horse, but can still be killed.

On a related topic, I've got a new idea for a game. Zombie Horse. You play as a horse that died in the Kentucky Derby and comes back as a zombie horse. Your goal is to get out of Kentucky to find some brains to eat.

+1. Thank you for doing your part to stop this from happening DBA. Much appreciated, and keep making more amazing templates!
