I have 4 images all with white around them. I put a transparent background behind them and try to I use the magic wand/fuzzy select tool to delete the white but it won't go away. I'm using gimp if someone could help. here is a link to one of the pictures.

Sounds like you need to right click on the layer and add an alpha channel to the layer. Then you should be able to delete the white.

id recommend getting photoshop. it sounds like the background file is locked, so you need to remove the layer from the background, so you can then use the wand tool to remove it lust creating transparency around the object.

in photoshop, if using the wand different do this, right click the layer > "layer from background" click ok, delete the background, now you have the original layer, now try using the wand tool and you will notice the background now becomes transparent.

GIMP is fully capable of doing it, I've done it many times. You need to have a layer with all transparency, and a layer with the image on it, on top of the transparency layer. Then take the fuzzy select tool, and click the white. Now click Edit -> Clear. That should get rid of the white. You may have to play with the threshold of the fuzzy select tool if it doesn't get the right effect. If it isn't right just undo, and then try again... That should do the trick!
