Photics Cool Tip #11 — Managing Image Sizes

Here's something unusual that I noticed with GameSalad today...

I imported a 57K image into GameSalad, which was compressed with ImageOptim twice.
That file ballooned to 176 KB once imported into GameSalad. That's almost triple in size.

One of the biggest weaknesses for GameSalad is slowness in loading. What slows down loading? Large images can slow down the loading. So, to fix this, you might want to manually update your images by going into the project package. I don't know if it's going to make a difference, as GameSalad compresses the images again while publishing. (Heh, I think I can find out when I try to publish Arch Fiery.)

So, this is really a tip for GameSalad... what's going on here? Are Indexed PNG files bad for GameSalad? I sent a "test.png" file to you, so you can see what's going on.

Suggestions...

1 - Don't change the images. Have an advanced setting where developers can manually compress/convert images.
2 - Don't auto-create non-retina display graphics. Advanced users should be able to manually manage these files too.

Not only would this improve performance, but it would help testing... as I wouldn't have to wait for GameSalad to compress my images.
