the thing is that all the major app review sites i've seen had in the advertise section top games from the app store i meen no exception they are big companies... this is how money are made, you have to invest to obtain something you can't just do nothing and expect something. I've worked in adverising domain and i've done a simple math that goes like this : from 1.210.000, 1% is verry likely to click that meens 12 100 clicks and because it's an app review site 10 % must instal thee app that been 1, 210 copys sold iven if i sell just 700 copies let not forget the impac that 700 copies will have on app store the momentul from this if it's a good game can proppel me in to the top 100, i don't have that money to gamble right now but i am thinking seriously about this also you have to know that my first game will probably be on app store next week. It's called Hunt the Stars

Marketing for the app store is not like any other marketing out there. Im not gonna tell you no to buy the ad. I personally wouldn't buy it. You will get far better results from convincing a review site to review your game for free IMO.

I completely agree that you have to spend money to make money and I do plan on advertising my next update of Test Launch. However, 700$ is a big upfront cost to consider.
Also remember those people who didn't spend a single penny to launch or advertise. But if you do advertise 0n 148apps do let us know. if it breaks even i.e, 750 sales it is 100% worth it regardless of how it effects your ranking IMO
Personally I would exhaust all the free avenues first.
One of the Popcap guys once said that a marketing person advised them that if their marketing budget was only 50,000$ - which is low - to instead take that 50K and put it back into the game. Buy better music, sound effects, art, etc.
Not worth it. Spent $500 on appSafari.com about a year ago for a month of banner placement. There was no noticeable bump in downloads and the ads were for free apps. There is no way to track it beyond impressions and clicks anyways so you won't know if people actually buy/download. If those banner ads worked, then there would be no way to get them because people would renew. Notice that the banners turn over every month. The only ads that seem to stay are ads to developers for app promotion services. Tells you who really looks at those ads and its not the app buying public...

I think that is a less risky investment.
