Slow Acceleration

Hi everybody
I've got a problem, I'm trying to get my jumping control sorted, and I've decided to go for the accelerate up approach, I've got the options rigged up like this...
when jump? is true
degree '270'
Speed '500'
so I tested it and nothing happened, my character didn't 'jump'
so I tried turning jump? To true permanently, just to see what happened.
What happened was my character started to rise, very slowly of the ground, it was closer to 5 than 500.
So what happened and how do I fix it?
