3gs performance halved and ram use doubled with 9.8?

So i've installed 9.8 and tested my game build on my ipad2 and 3gs...
ipad2 works perfectly fine (though has dropped from solid 60fps to around 50fps)
but 3gs is a mess. Am getting around 15-20fps (previously 50fps+), sound effects don't play and ram usage has doubled (particularly game engine, though all values seem to be up).
Now my game isn't big nor clever, and I've spent time and focus keeping it snappy and optimized - its meant to be a twitchy and with good ,fast feedback.
What is going on here? To add to this - actually getting it to build on the GS viewer on 3gs is nigh-on impossible, it crashes, loses connection, stalls on download - and if it works (and you're lucky) it takes about 5mins to build. On the iPad 2 this takes about 15seconds without any hiccups 99% of the time.
I've noticed this aspect is getting worse and worse every new build - is 3gs getting the prickly end of pineapple?
