Level Design Questions/Introduction

Hello everyone,
My name is Mark, and I am new to GameSalad. I am a senior in college, and for my internship, I am attempting to make an iPhone game and get it up on the App Store. Funny thing is, I'm a music business student that wants to do game soundtracks, and while this looks to be the best thing I could do to beef up my resume, I am learning this all as I go.
I first sat down with GameSalad last night, and I was able to create an actor that would run left or right depending on which keys I was pressing.
I've never worked with a game creator of any sort, and I would like to learn to do as much of the work as I can by myself. I will be spending some time getting acquainted with the basic concepts and functions of GameSalad, and I feel that creating my game's first level (I'd like to attempt a platforming game) would be a good way to start getting to know the program. If there's a better first step, feel free to point me in the right direction, I'd love any tips that people can share.
With regards to creating a level, Would I be correct in guessing I would be able to sketch a level, edit the image in Gimp, and import a specific filetype with the completed level into GameSalad, to be further edited with the game mechanics? Or is the process completely different?
Thanks for the help, everyone.

So let's say I get my PNG of my level ready to go, and import it into GS Creator. Once I set up the physics and add an actor, I will need to create collision detection for every item that I don't simply want him passing through, correct?
As far as level creation goes I would recommend that you have one image as a background image and separate images for other elements. So for example you will want a separate image to use for the platform actor. Then you will drag this actor into the scene and your character can walk on it. If everything is on one png image you will need to create invisible actors with collision rules and lay them over the background. Just remember that GS does not have pixel collision. So if you have a platform with severely rounded corners (as an example) your character will still collide with the invisible corners of the rectangular actor and will appear to float at the edge of the platform. So keep this in mind when you are creating your art.
Best of luck!
