You need to use macports im told to install gimp on lion.

I agree with Tenrdrmer and Pilot.

I love Photoshop, and I got it for a good price. But Sumopaint is pretty good too.
Inkscape is amazing as well. I'd try those.

Im a Adobe guy, though. So I have both Photoshop and Illustrator.

If you have a PC, Paint.NET is awesome..

It's totally free and there are a ton of free plugins as well..

For the 'arti-challenged' I would suggest inkscape and a 'building your art approach' rather than trying to draw in bitmap based programs like gimp, sumo, pain.net.

I use DAZ Studio... ...which is free. Well... it's sorta free. It's "Tell-Ware" (...or it was when I downloaded it) and now the site wants you to subscribe to the newsletter.

Oh... and it seems that the software might not be free much longer.

It looks like the sale ends on Halloween... MUWHAHAHAHA!
