Uploading a new icon

I wanted to upload a new icon, but didn't want to remove the binary
Could I keep most of the icon the same, and change the background, and just update it through itunes connect by uploading a 512X512 one?
The 57X57 icon is for the app store itself right and can only be updated by submitting a new binary?
