Viewer installation problem

Everything seems to have gone well. Certificates, provisioning, app id etc.
Followed Tshirt's video of the new xcode and it built an ios emulator on my imac. But I was confused as there was nothing on the ipad. Fiddled around and saw there was an option in xcode to build the viewer on an ios device (which i assume is what I want) but when i select it this message comes up:
"No provisioned iOS devices are available with a compatible iOS version. Connect an iOS device with a recent enough version of iOS to run your application or choose an iOS simulator as the destination."
I'm all at sea, I'm afraid. I have no experience of coding or development so this is all Greek to me. I'm in your hands.

Can I get where I need to be with these, or do I need to start again?
