Unofficial Droid Device Listing

There are 100s of android devices out there. Due to this there are multiple device aspect ratios.
What I would like to do is this. Lets all get together and list the ones we know. Then once we have a large list we as Devs can go to this list and figure out the best way to approach which sizes fits best for the most used devices. Phones, Smart Phones, Tablets, and readers.

So you will come here and list a Droid device you know of and its screen resolutions. Do not repeat a device if it is already been added.

Example:

Galaxy S 2 4.3" 800x480

Galaxy Tab 10.1 1280x800

HTC EVO Design 4G 4.0 540 x 960

Maybe this can become a page on the GS site or a Sticky.

Would be useful to list the aspect Ratio used for that device as well.

Edit: Also moved to Android Publishing and Stickied. Please try make your threads in the right category.

    Personaly

I will only be targeting the Nook and the Kindle fire to make sure i have a screen size that fits them perfectly.

All droid phones i will just be uploading my iPhone retina games to them and letting GS put the black bars on the sides.

    :)

Same Plan here, Im not sure i'll even mess with the android Market since the Amazon App Store is accessible to all Android Devices. I think Statistically it brings in better sales as well.

That's my plan as well, targeting Nook and Kindle Fire, to make sure it fits the screen perfectly.

just a minor bit of info for you all. A developer friend is shifting certain apps on Amazon 2 to 1 on Itunes. It's based on a certain market but I was more than surprised, and has made me reappraise my ideas. Sadly us non US dev can't get on Nook without a US address and bank account (I guess Canada is OK?).

If a large % of Devs are going to focus on a few types of android devices........ Will GS attempt to make some extra presets for these types. 320x240 iphone/ 960x480 iphone retina/1024x760 ipad, and andorid presets to choose from?
  • tenrdrmertenrdrmer Member, Sous Chef, Senior Sous-Chef Posts: 9,934
You have those now. To publish to the 3:2 resolutions you just use the iPhone project file and when publishing click Android. The 4:3 resolutions you do the same just with the iPad Project file.

i understand that. But Nook Color and Kindle Fire are 1024x600 so its not the same ratio.

Gs published to iOS and made presets for said devices. I understand that android has way to many to make a preset for each one. But they could start making presets for most popular devices and new presets as new devices come out.

Or a Custom preset. Where we decide this projects ratio and resolutions.

I received this email from Barnes & Noble on October 25th, not sure if it is up and running yet:

    Dear Developer,

We are pleased to announce that we are nearing another significant milestone in the expansion of NOOK Developer.

In the coming days, developers whose companies are based in Canada, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain, will have the opportunity to sell and promote their content and applications to millions of Barnes & Noble customers in the United States.

We invite developers based in these countries to simply apply to become a Qualified NOOK App Developer. Then, once qualified, developers should complete their banking and account information along with their applications Meta-Data submission and submit this for review to us.

    Hopefully that helps!

Another big suck with nook is the turnaround time. I signed up a couple days ago and they sent me an email saying I will get a response to my application within the next 2 weeks. :( Amazon was fast and let me upload an app as soon as the account was created. :)

Thanks for the great news! Italy is not on the list :( but since they're just opening to new countries maybe it will be added soon.

    back to presets..........................................

Custom Sizing Preset woiuld be great.
  • tenrdrmertenrdrmer Member, Sous Chef, Senior Sous-Chef Posts: 9,934
They just need to change the iPhone and iPad presets to a less specific 3:2 and 4:3 ratio preset. You can set it to auto scale to whatever the resolution size it needs based on those two ratios and then anything running the wrong ratio will add some extra black or grey bars. For example. I sent my game to someone with an Android tablet and it was built on the kindle/nook setting. It just added some grey bars down the side to fill the small extra space from the screen size difference. I think for Android Tablets I will only be using the Kindle/nook setting. Then iPhone setting for all handhelds.

@tshirtbooth how to open account for kindle if you r non US?

I dont find the black/grey bars to be professional. It will just make your game look like you didnt know what you were doing. I know its nice to be able to add that you also publish to android as well. But I would prefer not to dp any android publishing until GS has a stronger hold on how they are going to fix these issues. I still think there should be a Custom Preset. This way you can decide exactly what your looking for.

I have a question since we are now able to make games for android does this mean they will be able to be played on the blackberry playbook android player?? cause I believe they have developed a system that you just repackage the file to a .BAR and its able to play in the player this would be huge as it can open up a new market for game salad developers by that I mean both on the playbook's app world and also when the new QNX phones come out as they have said that they will keep the screen ratio the same so if you make an app for the blackberry playbook now it can also run on their blackberry QNX phones once they come out, with out having to do anything. DOES ANY ONE KNOW??? i wouldnt mind supporting blackberry they are a bit of an under dog now a days maybe T-shirt booth wouldnt mind either he's canadian no??? :P ILL BE SO EXCITED IF WE CAN!!!!!! :)
