First ever game project - Cyanside.

Hey there guys and gals, I have decided to invest time into making apps now as im actually finding it alot of fun :D and very time consuming. I am looking for some feedback on what I have so far in terms of artwork and idea's for my new game I am creating.

The game takes place in the Cyanside of the universe which you are currently flying through, I was planning on creating numerous different games under the same story line for years to come to tag them all together and slowly create a little backstory :)

Thanks to dba's template I managed to get straight into making the type of game I was wanting to start off with, and got to work on the artwork.

Here are a few screengrabs of the work so far (I started this time last week). All artwork has been done by myself so far.

I need to add in the amount of cash you have into the shop screen and adapt it a lot more but that will be something that can grow.

Also in the game the characters you see on the screen are for effect only, there are 5 different vector like characters on different speeds to give an effect of depth and parallax scrolling throughout.

What I need help with is what kind of 'upgrades' or 'unlocks' would be good for a type of game like this? Just to explain the game mechanic I am going for is... classic Helicopter / Jetpack Joyride (goddamn I wish I could make something that good).

I have already thought of 'jetpack' upgrades that will give benefits to flying up and down faster to avoid things or the encased rock one for the ability to absorb a hit. But I cant really think what other things there could be. Since a game like this in my opinion relies on objectives to aim for.

And what do you guys think about adding like...medals or achievements? good idea? and how hard would it be to implement (remember this will be my first game).

Anyhow I just wanted to start a thread and add things to it as I progress for peoples opinions :P

    Thanks Darren, I wanna say actually a big thank you to yourself and whoever you work with to get them templates up. They are an amazing tool to getting new people like myself started on game salad to learn the mechanics.

    Without people like yourself im sure there would be a lot less newcomers on here building their very first app.

    I already have my eyes on some more templates you have which I really want to learn the mechanics around! But ill go one step at a time. Tonight im working on attributes for the unlocks etc... I'm sure ill have fun with that. :( Hopefully it is not too bad.

    But yeah, thanks again Darren, I really appreciate your work.

    I have the shop set up and works for the 3 upgradable jetpacks so far, I have most of an initial prototype done now, I still need to edit some particle effects and also try set up a "mission" system so that you have objectives to aim for for each run as well. But its a start! :D

    Sorry bout that.

    EDIT: Also just to explain I set the upgrades to work even without diamonds which is why my diamonds are in the negative regions and I can still buy it. Just for testing purposes

    Just finished incorporating a mission system in with cash rewards when certain objectives are complete (like tiny wings objectives that can be aimed for with each run). It's coming together nicely :)

    Thanks RKS :) and yeah im currently sorting out the technical side of things at the moment to improve performance, it runs fine but then again im testing it on my iphone 4 so im not sure how itll run on iphone 3g etc :(

    Looks very cool.
    One thing you might do to improve it is to add more things to watch out for. Maybe:
    Enemys ganging up on you
    Buildings or whatever that you actually hit

    I understand that you just started it, but It seems a little to simple.
