do i need hd images for iphone 4?

Iam a little confuse with the RI, if i want my game to workon iphone 4 i need to check RI? And if i do my images are twice the size? What happens if i dont check RI? Also whats retina display? Thank you

Thanks i understood the size being twice and divisible by 4, but no clear whats a retina display?
retina display means the same like make images twice? I thought it means having high quality images
