index variable?

When I create a new game-attribute, gamesalad asks me which type of variable i want... (integer, real, ... index)
Has anyone ever used the Index-Variable and knows what it is used for?

Is this some kind of array? I don't find any info about it in the wiki ...

    For now, all it is, is another integer type variable. Nothing more than that.
