Hey guys.

Finally received my usb cable with the hope that i can now install the viewer. I had tried loading through gmail but like many others, its not able to parse the project. So, i thought i'd get a usb cable and load that way. I tried following the instructions from GS about installing on an android device, the 1st thing was to open terminal and type - adb devices but it says - adb: command not found.

I have followed and done what is said in tenrdrmer's vid, i was now trying to follow the instructions below. The guide is from the cookbook;

http://cookbook.gamesalad.com/#question=4ebd5d48db04ec37df000050

I have the android package downloaded into the SDK folder at root level and have ran the terminal package under tools. I have then updated absolutely everything on the list.

Can anyone help? Im desperate to get the viewer installed so i can see how my games behave/misbehave!

Cheers

    adb is in the platform-tools folder of your android sdk. Drag and drop adb to a terminal window then type ' install ' then drag and drop the viewer apk

    [right click image and open in new window/tab for slighly bigger view]

    you might have to run adb first (just double click) on its own

    Thanks for your quick response Rob. I have double clicked the adb on its own 1st and then tried what you suggested with dragging the files in terminal, this is what i am getting;

    The kindle is plugged in via usb, it shows on the screen 'You can now transfer files from your computer to Kindle' and the drive shortcut is on my desktop and i can browse the folders on there!

    ok run 'adb devices' to see if the fire is there
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
    if i type that in terminal it shows me the original message about command not found. If i double click the adb file under platform tools it shows a massive list of commands and says process completed at the bottom but doesn't seem to do much.

    until you set the path to adb you have to type its full location or much easier than typing, drag and drop so

    blah blah 'adb devices' should return

    list of devices attached

    Here's where the folder is;

    This is what i see when typing adb devices;

    drag and drop adb to terminal then type devices

    hit return

    Ah making progress :) Sort of ...

    However, you can clearly see the fire is attached

    For some reason adb is not seeing your fire. I have been using adb successfully to install the viewer on AVDs (android virtual devices).

    Is there anywhere to turn on USB debugging on the Fire ?

    Applications > Development > USB debugging ?

    I think this will send you in the same app store file manager circles again but might be worth a read

    Nope afraid not!

    I just found this on the net, don't know whether i should attempt it;

    Im just restoring it to factory settings at the moment to see if that makes any difference seeing as i haven't put anything on it

    Great find... what was your search string?

    That is a hidden file on your MAC.

    [So the other people (TSB) who have got the viewer working on their Fire are using an amazon app store file manager?]

    Yeh i seem to be right stuck.

    Email to Gmail, try to install and get parse error.

    Try to install via an apk installer/file manager and can't because i can't get one on as I'm in the UK.

    Load with USB and ADB doesn't detect it!

    I found my link searching here;

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=usb+debugging+on+kindle+fire&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=xWvOTsHuKcS-8AOUmrziDw

    The only positive is I'm learning loads. I didn't even know how to enable hidden files. ha. However, i now know, have tried altering the file but made no difference. If i altered it and just entered the number without a full stop after it the kindle would no longer go into usb, put a full stop on the end and it does but the damn thing still doesn't show up. Read a comment on there and someone said that doesn't work with OSX 10.7.2! He obviously has the same prob as me then!

    Certainly great that you are learning stuff. Do take care with those now revealed hidden files (certainly shows how ugly MAC can be under the covers). Sorry about the tail chasing - I'm window watching for a fedex van with fire :)

    Path Finder is a superb MAC file manager deals with hidden files plus a whole lot more http://www.cocoatech.com/

    Yeh proper ugly really! Since having my mac i've had no need to learn stuff as for most people, they just work and are self explanatory, its only with issues like this you kinda realise you should learn stuff. ha.

    Thanks for the path finder link, i'll check it out.

    Hurry up Mr. Fedex man, hopefully you don't have all the same probs I'm having, although if you do and find a way to solve it i'll be ya bessie mate :)

    Fedex finally delivered so I will be on the case shortly - have you installed the viewer yet ?

    Awesome news. It is a lovely little device for its money, just wanna see how my games perform on it. Unfortunately i had given up with the viewer, what with my limited knowledge of all things android and the frustration that was growing i thought it was safer all round. I'll be extremely interested to see if the same happens with you or not, and if it does, whether you find a way around it! Are you on 10.7.2?
  • Rob2Rob2 Member Posts: 2,402
    No .. I'm still 10.6.8 .. and Fire is still in box as I got a bit side tracked :) But will certainly update on how it goes. Have you managed to install any versions of your apps?
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
    Just saw you logged on, was hoping you'd have a play and bring me some kind of good news! ha.

    I have been able to load NOTHING. Cant email the viewer due to not being able to parse the project, can't download a file manager as we can't access the amazon store from here and can't install via usb and adb as the Fire isn't detected! Also, the publishing from GS's end isn't signing the publishing files so isn't returning a working apk or i just get a publishing server error ... therefore, i can't test emailing a working apk of one of my games and seeing if that gets past the parse problem or not ...

    I ask what osx version you was on as when reading that thread on modifying the file for Kindle to show on adb devices, there was another report that it wasn't working on 10.7.2, so I'm guessing it works pre-lion!

    Im thinking of maybe firing up vmware at some point over the weekend and seeing if i can get it working on an older build of osx or a windows machine of some kind! Just want to get the viewer on for now and a file manager, not too fussed for the store, I'm sure that'll come in time!

    Sorry things are not working out and sorry I copped out this evening..

    Tomorrow AM for sure !!

    SUCCESS!!!! Sooo happy :)

    When you edit the .android/adb_usb.ini and insert 0x1949 at the end, the 'x' needs to be a capital, so in fact, you add 0X1949 at the end. Done that, saved and closed, killed off the adb server, plugged in, did adb devices, saw an entry of numbers (knowing it must of been the fire), did the install and BAM ...

    image

    I also installed apkinstaller which is a file manager, so i should now be able to email the apk's to myself, save locally and then use that to install. Having said that, it really is simple to install using the terminal and usb, depending on the size of the apk, it might be quicker than emailing. Either way, I'm chuffed.

    Tested a few of my 'live' games and with some tweaking, i'd release 1 or 2 of them happily. Testing a couple of WIP's, 1 would not be playable, shame! Thats my sci-fi game that i have a dev log on lurking somewhere and the other (kind of a platformer) is very playable at a decent FPS but a few things aren't quite working correctly, hopefully without too much tweaking that'd port over nicely :)

    Thanks for all your Rob with getting to know how to use terminal and the tools from Android :) Good Luck with yours, give us an update with how you're getting on once you've had a play.

    Somewhat late from me.. 'Congratulations' yipee whoop etc.. the adb business had been staring us in the face (2/3rds down the Fire FAQs... doh!) anyway it is a beautiful device, a little heavy maybe (they all are) but responsive and slick. For the money it is quite amazing and anyone coming back from the states should grab a couple.

    Have you managed to install a build of one of your apps? The viewer works great.. but builds are not happy at the moment.
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
    AH your kidding! D'oh indeed! As you said, it is an amazing little product for its money.

    I haven't managed to actually install a build yet, every time i tried to publish i either got the unable to sign apk error or the server is experiencing troubles. I did read someone else said viewer was great, published was terrible. I gave up trying to publish though and thought i'd wait for the GS crew to get back in, fix a few things and release a post.
