how do i make it so i can walk behind trees in a rpg style game? or walk in front or behind a fence?

Use layers, stuff on below layers you'd make yourself in front of, layers above you, you'd walk behind

so with a tree for example would u have it in 2 parts one part the bottom of the tree which u can walk in front of the and second part the top of a tree which u can walk behind both on different layers?
