Accelerometer: possible to evaluate travel speed of iphone?

Hi, sorry if this is a dumb question but is it possible to determine how fast the iphone is traveling say in a car?
I understand that gps would be the best options but could this be done in GS?

    Maybe enter the speed from the cars speedo ? That's about it.
