Entering text is a crucial part of what I am doing here... Please help.

New Here... Well a few days old on Game Salad, and just like a newborn I am trying to soak in the wealth of information here. I have a macbook but not any other apple products. I have recently been learning Objective C and how to use Xcode. I heard about GameSalad on youtube while I was watching a tutorial for the use of Eclipse, but GameSalad didn't register in my brain until several days later while I was googling something (not even close to the description of GameSalad) and it led me here. ♬ Oh What A Relief It Is! ♬ First off... I gotta thank who ever made this site, because I am determined to make this game and I think it woulda taken me about three years (of teaching myself) before i was able to even put together a prototype of what I want to do.. so you get a WHOA THIS SITE IS AWESOME stamp from me!

Now that you have a little background on how I ended up here, let me tell you what my questions are and see if I can get any help...

1. Text is going to be a MAJOR part of my game. Essentially I want the user to be able to go to a screen... type in some info... and the info that they type in each screen eventually ends up on the last screen... Is this possible using this site? If so can anyone give ideas on how to add those attributes to a page? If not, who do I beg to make it happen :-)

B. There is a video here that is giving a tutorial and I wanted to follow along but I can't find the downloads (supposed to be located on this site), that he is talking about in the first video of that series. Anyone know where they are, or who that is so I can ask them directly?

III. I am needy, in an ☞ older lady ☜ sort of way, meaning... i'm an older lady... and not extremely familiar with all the new jargon and technology and I don't see too well (without my glasses) either. (I mean I'm still cool and all (i guess)... just old fashioned)... O yea and I tend to ramble, lol.

Anyhoo, any help would be awesome with these, and in the future I will try to keep my posts shorter.

Okay, I see one way in the template... but I still welcome any feedback. (I guess my post is too long, so i haven't received any feedback :( )

For each piece of text you want displayed at the end of the game you will need a game tet attribute.

Go to a scene. And click on the attributes tabe that is found above your list of actors. Once in this tab that now lists the game attributes click the little plus sign in the bottom of that window. Select the attribute type - text. Call it whatever you want (it doesn't matter).

Then I would take a close look at the keyboard entry demo. you can find this in the start window that opens when you run the GS creator app on your mac. Once you use that method to let the player input text, you simply use a display text attribute at the end of your game and it will display what the player entered earlier. In the display text behavior you simply click on the little e next to the box that says "hello world" and you select your text attribute that is listed under game.

    Hi there muveemutt!

I will follow this closely since I am as interested in you in this functionality. I want my players/users to be able to name their players - input both text and digits - and I also want to perform mathematical operations with the input they made i.e 2*10=20 and display those results in some kind of nice overview.

I have looked at the keyboard demo (at least I found one but don't know if there are more) but aint sure whether it will help me - it seemed a bit tedious and I would want support to just bring up a virtual keyboard out-of-the-box as a part of Gamesalad.

    Ok,

I plan to work quiet some hours during xmas on this and any progress I make I will report back.

Open the gamesalad desktop app ("creator"). A smallish window pops up. From the list down the left side of this box make sure it says "new". In the third row of projects in that new section you will see one that says "Keyboard Entry..." Open that and study how it works. It will help a lot.

Depending on how much info you are looking to store ... it could require quite a lot of attributes to hold each entry (not impossible but a lot of work). Tables/arrays are on the 'coming' list of features that would make this so much easier. I have some quiz games on hold for that feature. I don't know you game idea but if you consider saving those values so they are there when the player comes back to the game, allowing different values for different players etc it might be a huge challenge. I'm not trying to be a downer as it is doable but like many others here we probably all have numerous games on the go, some set aside for future features ...

    @simo103
This was that I suspected. Felt like the keyboard demo was for simpler things like 'state your name' and stuff.
So I guess that waiting for arrays and more support for text/digits is the best plan - at least for me since I will use quiet a few fields and submenus etc.
The alternative is of course to try coding in apples dev environment which seems quiet straight forward for simpler apps (am not a coder...)

@game4haken Yes that is the reason I am here, I am not a "coder" per se, but I do know the code to make the text output... there just isn't anywhere to put it :-) so it's like I can either use the feature that is listed as the template... or I have to make it on my own, because mine is ALL text mostly. As far as Xcode... even for simple apps, not for me just yet either. still trying to figure out the difference between Objective C, and C... then there's still Java and X5... GS has to be the easiest way... @simo103 THAT IS BAD NEWS FOR ME TO HEAR! :-( I don't wanna put it on hold I am doing an app... I don't have any design experience (or $ to buy packs) so a text app is the perfect solution for me. a little simple this and that... add a little audio and done. So you are saying adding and storing a lot of info for the user is tedious but it can be done... I'm saying SHOOT! @scitunes thanks I did that and although I don't want to just copy peoples work, I did it just to see how it works, and it works fine for what I am doing, but my app needs a little more than what that is providing... almost like spreadsheet functions. I been looking for tutorials on text but still haven't found any. EITHER WAY, Thank you all for replying... and sorry it took so long to respond... I couldn't find the thread lol.

I haven looked lately but I did find these a while back which I thought might work for my non-game focussed ideas. Perhaps they might work for you:

Hey I havent read all the posts, but the state Gamesalad is in now....I would not try to do what you are wanting. It will take you an incredibly long time. For ANY piece of text you want to use, it requires a text attribute. On top of this, you need to do 3 additional things with each attribute...change it, save it, and load it. I made a christmas list app and it took way too long to do, with 10 lists and 19 text attributes for each, it took me a week just to code the text parts. I would definitely wait until we have arrays. Not to bring you down, but just get to know GS and work on this idea you have when we get more functionality with text.

On top of that, your user input text is going to look like garbage compared to any text you've made yourself (i.e. photoshop). Gamesalads user input text looks all blurry.

@bluebyu25 THANK YOU for that... I was wondering why the text was looking blurry... I thought it was something I was doing! LOL well at least knowing that is a relief, I was like how in the hec am I gonna fix that! Well thanks for the heads up. I guess I will change direction and try to make a game instead... God help us all if I can get THAT to go right. I got a few templates I am looking at... I hope that I can change them up enough plus incorporate some kind of game too. Thanks again all... CHEERS! :-)

I've been thinking on how to use the 'Spawn' feature to load a question template.
With the new keyboard input that could be useful - but - gives of course a number of text attributes.
So far I have not been able to produce this - but - think it's doable.
But more and more I tend to think that I need another development tool to bind questions/answers/valued together...
