It'd get you a pack of downloads for the first day for sure.

But… It could be the boost you need to get some press to write about you. Its all such a risky business in general. We made Penguin Glide free till wed and it is all ready climbing into top 300 US for iPad and it had no US rank before going free.
Why don't the downloads count??? Can you explain...

How many downloads have you gotten since going Free?
Maybe... JUST MAYBE.. For a game series, have the first version as a free app. Get the name out, then "Penguin Glide 2" for example is paid and already has a reputation.
Plus there's nothing wrong with a little iAD support on your free game
