transparent light

I need to make a glowing lamp in photoshop that I can import into GS with a transparent glowing bit round the edges. Is this possible? or do you
have to have a background behind the lighting effect?

    Make your lamp up . . . on a nice transparent background.
    Then make your glow on a separate later.

    Import both into GS stick the lamp in the scene and the glow above the lamp, in 'graphics' change the glow's blending mode to screen.
