Starting simple

I'm a newbie with GS. I decided to start simple with the goal to work up to a complete game design. So to start out I just want to make one platformer type scene with an actor/player that is moveable by keyboard arrow keys left and right and space to jump. I want to have one strip of ground actor and a one block obstacle actor. The player should move towards the obstacle and be able to jump on top of it or over it.

Anyone want to point me at some tutorials, or give me a general idea of what I need to do? I don't want a template unless it is well commented. I want to learn how this stuff works.

    Youtube.

There are many more, most by tshirtbooth, just do some digging on youtube. Tons of stuff there as well as gshelper.com

A good recourse is The Unofficial Gamesalad Cookbook on the app store. A bit pricy, but offers a lot of stuff you will find to be helpful as you go along.

Is this on the iOS store only or Mac App store too?

Hi Pixelgun (nice name, by the way), and welcome to GS.

Whether the book's on the Mac App store as well as iTunes, I'm not sure, but another resource for platform games for you:

There's a very good platform template in the dialog box that appears when you first open GSC. It's called Platformer Template. That'll save you "reinventing the wheel" to an extent and if you study the Rules and experiment with changing values, artwork, etc, that's a great way to learn. Any more questions, ask away, there's a whole bunch of people willing to help out. :-)
