Springs!

Hi everyone!
I am relatively new to GameSalad and am working on creating a game where, without giving it all away, an actor, let's call him LEADER, tries to navigate various puzzle-like-levels.... Think Cut the Rope but with a character that YOU control moving left to right.... almost like Doodle Jump.... whatever, you get the picture.
So, I have several "platforms" that the LEADER goes on: ROCK (Friction=4), ICE (Friction=0), and BUSH (destroys after 2 seconds on it). I also have an enemy, call him ENEMY, who if you touch, the scene restarts.
**The Problem**
I am trying to add another element to the game - a spring. What I have so far is another element that has the collide action with LEADER. To make the bounciness, I tried maxing out the restitution to 2. But the LEADER's bounce is weird, and not really controllable - plus they don't bounce if they are moving either left or right at the time of contact. Any advice?
Thanks a ton!
