Discussing "Lite", "HD", "Full version", etc,.

Hi, so I see it this way:

If you are publishing a game to the App Store for the iPhone as well as iPad, it's OK (still?) to call your app "The name of my App" for iPhone and "The name of my app HD" for the iPad. HD meaning High Definition, which is a bit of a misnomer as iPhone 4 and beyond has a retina display which is higher resolution than the iPad.... although maybe iPad3 will have retina display?

If you're publishing a version of the app (usually free) as a "taster", with the majority of the game locked, it's name is normally in the form of "The name of my app Lite".

Any other "appendages" I've forgotten? Do you have to put "HD" after the name if you are publishing for the iPhone as well as the iPad? Do you have to put "Lite" after the name if it's a cut-down taster? What about publishing to Android platform, still the same additions? Who invented marmite?

Any thoughts on the above I'll be interested to read, thanks. :-) (But don't worry about the marmite question ;-) )

if you have an iPhone version of the game and want to issue an iPad version, you need to add something to the name as that name is already taken in appStore.
you could always append your name with 'for iPad' … oh dear HD means High Definition … I thought it was for Huge Device! ;)

think Apple would Not approve an app with unlockable levels unless it was branded with 'Lite' … buyer awareness and elimination of complaints.

and, actually the marmite question is the best!

funny thing is... I hate the fact that I had to name my iPad version Dino Bird "HD"
the quality is not better then The iphone for sure, but for what ever reason; after releasing my game on iphone first, apple would NOT allow me to give it the SAME name.
as the iphone version which was just "Dino Bird"

I cant wait to see the day that gamesalad integrates a multiple platform option that automatically adjusts for ipad/ipod devices. :-?

most all of the iPhone apps play nicely on the iPad.

think having two versions on the appStore gives better exposure … when user does a search, your icon will show up twice!

the really bigName companies do two versions! (and think EA would be capable of doing just one!)

What we do is put a symbol on our iPhone games name like the registered symbol. This is common on the app store.

    Thanks for confirmation/clarification, guys.

A special thanks to MH for answering my marmite question! :-) (I really wasn't expecting an answer to that one...)

The reason the iPad resolution can be called HD is because the vertical resolution is higher than 720. The iPads vertical resolution is 768 whereas the iPhone 4's retina vertical resolution is 640. Even if you were to consider the horizontal and vertical resolution of the iPad at 1024 x 768, it is still higher resolution than retina's 960 x 640. The iPhone 4 looks so much better than the iPad because the DPI is much higher due to the much smaller screen. Due to the different aspect ratio's of tv's, phones and other devices, everything is focused on the vertical resolution instead of the horizontal. When you buy a TV, they just say if it's 1080p or 720p, which is the vertical resolution. Most consumers don't even know the horizontal resolution of those tv's are 1920 and 1280 respectively.

Thank you for the explanation, Eric, that makes perfect sense. :-) (I wonder if a future iPad will ever get an even higher resolution?)

Hi wayman; definitely - I'm off for another piece of bread, butter and marmite with a cup of tea! :-D

Wait so you can't publish the same name to both iPad and iPhone?
I thought if their price was the same you could share the name and even GameCentre high scores.

I'm not sure if there is a way to do it with gamesalad yet, but you CAN do it with native software IDE's like Unity/xcode,etc.

but if you can do this I would love for someone to state how, because I was not able to keep the same name for both of my ISO apps

I think the new iPad will definitely be a higher resolution. I always thought my iPad screen looked great until I got my iPhone 4. Now after using my iPhone 4 for a while then looking at the iPad or older iPhone, its like day and night. I'd like to think they would keep the same aspect ratio when they increase resolution. They did that with the iPhone by simply doubling the resolution. Then end result is something Steve Jobs had planned for years. All the old iPhone apps play perfectly on the new high resolution iPhones so the developer doesn't have to scrap everything and build for a new resolution. Of course the option is there to double the resolution if you want super crisp graphics. Thats what is so frustrating about developing for android, there are so many different resolutions and processor speeds. My last app I put up was available to over 924 devices, thats insane. Of course there is no way I can test on even a fraction of those devices. That is basically why android market customers are given the option for a full refund of your app before 15 minutes by simply clicking a button. They are essentially unpaid beta testers. In my opinion letting your paying customers be the guinea pigs, is a bad business move.

Its very likely though that the new iPad will have a different aspect ratio simply so it can be around a 16x9 ratio instead of 4x3. They might make it 2048x1536, so it will double perfectly but that is a bit odd of a resolution. I'm sure apple will find a way to keep it developer friendly as they always have.

Interesting reading, Eric. Yes, I too have a feeling that iPad 3 might be higher resolution (although I won't bet on it!)

So if it does happen, maybe as well as HD append, we'll need EHD (Even Higher Definition...) ;-)
