Here's a good place to start for learning about GameSalad and what you can do with it.

    http://cookbook.gamesalad.com/tutorials/1/parts/1

As far as graphics, most people use programs like Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, both of those are very expensive, and have a huge learning curve if you are not familiar with them.

There are free alternatives to those, like Inkscape, and Gimp, and Pixen, and several others. Inkscape and Gimp being the more popular ones. Inkscape is a vector program, and Gimp is a bitmap program. Download both and see what works for you.

@jakejefferys .. welcome and good luck. My advice would to learn from the links SlickZero provided and play around a bit just to get your feet wet and then consider purchasing a template from GSHelper.com or DeepBlueApps.com (or the Marketplace in the link at the top). You could then use these excellent templates from Pro users to built out your first game, replace actors, make tons of levels and make it your own. During that process you will learn a whole lot AND also hopefully get your first game to a level where it's worth publishing. The knowledge gained from that whole 1st process will help you take your own ideas and start from scratch for your 2nd, 3rd etc ... games!
