Is it a good idea to launch a game for free?

I've noticed some people have their game be free for the first few days of being out then switch it to paid. Does this work well? I feel like it would be a good way to get some ratings and reviews before going paid.

Under the assumption that you have a good solid game. I had better results with start paid, go free, back to paid.

When you switch to paid, your iTunes rank resets and by that time you are already out of the new release list. In addition, nobody is looking for the 'price increase' apps, they are looking for the 'price decrease' ones.

If your game is not that good, it doesn't really matter what you'll do.

A lot of games nowadays follow the 'freemium' business model. That means the game is always free but instead monetizes through microtransactions within the game. I've noticed that GameSalad now support this. This makes the game more accessible to consumers who are incredibly price sensitive while still allowing the developer to make money. In fact, freemium games can be very profitable, although be aware monetizing such users is a science!
