Okay to Resize Images After They're Imported?

Has anyone had any experience with resizing image files after they have been imported into a GS project.

Ex. I designed all my graphics to be 2x size. Can I go into the GS project file via Finder, (using "Show Package Contents"), and run a Photoshop batch to resize all the PNG's that live in the images folder inside?

I know some programs can be finicky if there is any change in metadata, size etc. (Ex. I noticed that the size of the image files is annotated in one of the XML docs. I assume that this is just so that you can get the estimated project size on the lower right corner of the GS editor, but I wasn't sure.) This seems like a much quicker solution, however, I do have all my images stored elsewhere and can always resize and reimport/replace from there.

Within the GameSalad creator itself, click images and just drag and drop all your new ones there, it'll ask you to create new versions or replace, just select replace. This is of course providing they are all named the same

Why not simply try it ?

Very true. Well, I went ahead and tried it and the answer is, yes, it works just fine. Here's what I did for the curious:

    1. Duplicate/Back-Up your project.
    2. Right click and "Show Package Contents" on project file.
    3. Copy the "images" folder to a location outside the project.
    4. Resize your images. Batch 50% reduction action in Photoshop works really well.
    5. Copy your the new smaller files back into the images folder within the project.

GS doesn't seem to be any the wiser, and you've saved some space. The only thing to watch out for is that, if you have one or two non double res images you may have missed, this will mess them up.

actually the only time GS pays attention to images for that folder is when you import them …
their name and size are listed in assets … though, not the dpi :-?
after that they are referenced by name/number and displayed in the size you assign them in your project …

most of us do our optimizations from with-in that folder …

You can happily work on images from within GS, double click in the library and they open in preview :)

What rob2 says is correct but if you have photoshop set up as your default for opening .png, when you click on the image file in the GS editor it opens and can be save directly from PS to GS. This is often how I work with modifying the graphics and then saving then, then turning on the preview in the editor which calls the graphics again and so I can check how they look. If its a matter of resize you will have to change any instances and prototypes but this can be done by re-dragging the art to the actor image window in most cases but sometimes you have to manually change the image size in the properties.

There is though the odd occasion when the file seems to still be referencing the image folder in a previous save. This can usually be sorted by closing the editor and restarting it. I often make sure this is not happening by zipping old versions of the working file and hiding uncompressed versions in another folder.

    hope this helps.

I use a program called "ResizeMe" just google it.. It will import all your images and resize them to what ever size you want then save them out to png. Maybe this could help you or anyone else looking to resize lots of images quickly.
