Forgive me if this is a silly question. I have tried searching the forum, but can't find a specific answer. To create an ipad app in HD would i need to create my background image 2048 x 1536 72 dpi in photoshop? ie double the current ipad screen size. Plus for image optimisation would i need to have images divisible by 4 instead of 2, seeing as the size is doubled?

I also guess creating the images using this size would also help prepare for IPAD3 retina display? Could someone confirm, thank you

The current iPad models (both the original and the iPad 2) have a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, doubling the size of the image will use up 4 times the memory of the correct size, will impact performance and will lose quality as when you scale it to 50% to fit the screen Gamesalad's less than ideal antialiasing tends to screw up any antialiasing in your image.

If you are planning ahead (iPad 3) - personally I would make up your background image at 2048 x 1536 - and then scale it down to 1024 x 768 (inside Photoshop) for current devices - although I am not sure how resolution independence will work with the iPad 3 . . . ?

cheers tynan. I have seen a lot of apps on ipad that are HD. How can i create an app in HD? Do i have to create everything in proportion to a 2048 x 1536 background?

@appybank … to have your iPad app listed as HD … just add HD to it name!

iPad is HD in reference to vertical axis … >720 pixels in any orientation
therefore developers added the HD tag to their apps to designate that they were made for iPads
and your current sized bg is High Density

all, this is confusing as somehow the term "Resolution" is now being applied as a defining characteristic of digital images
and, I am sure you are not in the least bit interested in topics like spatial resolution

IMO In GS, a better name for this option would have been Device Independence …
we would know in checking that: GS when publishing our games would create images with correctSize needed for non-Retina display devices
(of course that is a duplicate of all images … an original and a reSized one)

"I have seen a lot of apps on ipad that are HD. How can i create an app in HD?

The term 'HD' is not used in a strictly technical sense when people stick it on the end of their app name . . . ("CommunistDonkeyAttackHD-!!!™") . . it's just means they are iPad apps and not iPhone/iPod apps, it's a bit of a misnomer.

Simply create your app at the resolution of the screen you will be using, the resolution of the current iPad models is 1024 x 768, if you want to call that size 'HD' then go for it, stick 'HD' on the end of your app name if you feel it adds something, but the iPad apps that are 'HD' are exactly the same resolution (1024 x 768) as the iPad apps that haven't bothered to stick 'HD' on the end.

Do i have to create everything in proportion to a 2048 x 1536 background?"

Everything ? In proportion ? Not sure what your question means ?

The iPads are 1024 x 768, that's the maximum resolution they are able to display, making your files higher resolution will not make them higher quality or more 'HD' when used on the iPad and iPad2.

    HD = High Definition.

thanx @Tynan … comes from my own density … which increases when multi-tasking with ADHD !
also, think I was smoking your Steam! which I loved watching!
