24 Hour Challenge #2 Discussion.

I'm thinking about organising this once per month.

Everyone feel free to offer suggestions.

Option 1: I choose a theme and everyone goes from there!
Option 2: No Theme. Everyone just goes all out in their own way.
Option 3: Everyone sends me $5 each, a Month prior to the challenge. I then get my (Quality) Graphics artist to design a unique Graphics pack which will be distributed out to all contestants (yes for free use) in and out of the competition. Of course that way would have to have a reasonable amount of contestants. No it's not a profit scheme. All to the Artist. And you all make a game with only those Graphics.
Option 4: It could be more original. I could say what kind of controls the game has to use. Or what kind of style.

Might organise the next one for April the 1st.

Discuss away! Anyone willing to offer prizes for the next one please let us know.

ANYONE can enter. It doesn't matter on your level of skill. You will not be judged on the amount of experience you have.
There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in all future competitions.

    @ozboybrian - I think this is a great idea. A great way for me to push myself to see what I can do and everyone else in a short time. The options are a hard choice because I like them all. If you get enough people not giving their opinion on which option maybe the day before the challenge you put those 4 options in a random generator to select which option to do. Woot Woot!!! :-j

    The contest was my idea!!! You dirty little cannier! :) :P jks jks
    But you need a theme if WE ARE doing it regularly as people could just make it the week before...
    I sort of like option 3... Im edgy on it...

    I would be interested but don't understand the need for everything to be turned into some competition! I think it would be better to have no prizes and just have some fun especially when some people are in my opinion ruining the spirit of it.

    Cheers.

    @LeonardDeveloper - please stop double commenting. It's becoming frustrating and I don't wish to copy and paste our Skype conversation to settle your ego.
    Thank you for your contribution of prizes and asking FBS to be a Judge instead of me but you need to calm down mate.

    @Killerpenguins - Not a bad idea buddy :D

    @Bright-Spark-Games -Totally get what you're saying there mate. Totally.... It was the idea for the original thread. All it really said to begin with was "this is what i'm doing, if anyone wants to join in the they can, i'll pick the best one and do a shout out for the game on LTi - if anyone else wants to offer prizes they can" But that's all there really was to it. It's supposed to be fun. I hope it can get that way and stay that way.
    It didn't matter if there was anymore prizes or not. But they sure are appreciated =)

    @ozboybrian Sounds good, I don't think 'mark schemes' for the games are needed either just everyone saying wow look what we can do in 24 hours and try inspire each other and make a few friendships etc. Id love to discuss this some more over Skype or something?

    Cheers.

    Exactly mate! Pumping out a whole game in 24hrs is awesome.
    And sure mate, my Skype username is the same as my GS username :)

    I think personally it should be left open as much as possible, that way you're likely to get a wider array of games on show.
    If its every month it can't be for prizes, people won't keep donating!
    Everyone chip in for art is bad idea as the number of entry's will always vary! Therefore you won't get a consistent amount and games will look to similar.

    I say let people get art, sounds etc from where they want, leave it open as possible, no prizes unless someone donates off their own back (don't actively seek prizes) and just have it judged as i think its an inspiration to try and better what you've done.

    The only rule i would have is that the game can't be from a template!

    Oh and yes @LeonardDeveloper ... please stop mentioning how it was your idea ... no one cares and everyone has read it multiple times now over the couple of threads! It is starting to become annoying!

    Oh and sorry for double posts.... It hard to edit on iPhone
    @ozboybrian
    k :) I set up a website for the contest... You can check it out if you like, and I thought you wanted a different judge so you yourself could enter.... Hence our Skype conversation....
    As for "copy and Paste our Skype conversation to settle my ego" don't quite know what you're talking about but I'm sorry if I did anything :)

    @Leonard It clearly wash't a joke you did this before when RD was making ideas for Gamesalad Interface. Plus you set up a 'website' and another thread about it seeming slightly more than a joke :')
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
    @LeonardDeveloper ... If it was a joke you wouldn't keep mentioning it. Its been on this thread and the other 1 or 2 a couple of times! OK maybe 'everyone' was a bit embellished if you're going to be pedantic but i bet i speak for a fair few .. most just probably ignore it .. since it was brought up by Brian, i simply echoed the sentiments. Don't go all emo on me and turn it into a childish flame war!

    @ozboybrian ... great, fun ideas ... can be a challenge to run a contest, I believe Stormy would agree ... what with various opinions on rule interpretation and how judging was done ... so I think the lighter, more open, looser ... perhaps would be better for this ... and would contrast nicely with TOTB throughout the year. I kind of liked your idea about everyone using the same image pack, but also get beefy's point about being open and just seeing what people can do. Perhaps make it so one object/image needs to be used? Either way looks like lots of fun and will for sure participate in the future ones.

    Thanks @Beefy_clyro and +1
    @simo103 - +1 as well. Love the object idea.

    My original idea was to just have fun... I didn't even want to be a contestant.
    I was going to run it on my own and that's all there is to it.

    If some people say they would be happy to just see me run it on my own mostly. Please say so and I will continue to do just that in future in a more professional organised way :)

    Thanks again everyone!
    Sorry for the confusal with @LeonardDeveloper - He told me he'll settle down a little now. We all have our days. Especially me :D

    Note - if I do do it in future. I'm thinking.
    No templates of course.
    Different Judges every time.
    ANYONE can enter.
    Maybe every 6 months after the TOTB i'll organise art and stuff out of my own pocket and see what everyone comes up with in a special event.
    But yeah if you feel comfortable with me holding these competitions/challenges... Whatever it's called now lol. Let me know.
    Otherwise I don't mind passing the torch on if need be. But I was having a lot of fun till it got out of hand.

    @ozboybrian, I would consider joining in if it became more organized. This time it was a big mess!
    I would recommend that YOU set up the whole thing, so that there are simple instructions, a STANDARD time and not a million posts from Jack ;)
    Also I don't think prizes are necessary, as the prize would be we gain experience and skill, and bragging rights.

    Henry

    Edit: @LeonardDeveloper, what does it matter who's idea this was? Just be happy.

    GMT is the worlds standard time, And I appreciate how you insulted my orginazion skills :P :P

    @LeonardDeveloper ... no worries.

    Im happy for you to organise it Brian, as far as I'm concerned, this challenge is what it is ... a 24 hour game making challenge! Its not a month like TOTB, it should be proper light hearted and fun challenge to try and give people ideas/motivation to do a quick game or make a decent start on a proper game!
  • LeonardDeveloperLeonardDeveloper Member Posts: 4,630
    Maybe no prizes... Just a competition
    @beefy cheers mate!
  • LumpAppsLumpApps Member Posts: 2,881
    Perhaps let someone build graphics for free and let everyone have a go from there?
    For example someone builds a main character, some enemies, platforms and backgrounds. Then everyone uses those to build a game?
    Dunno. Could be fun.
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
    I generally wouldn't participate in things like that if too much is going to be dictated to me. Having a theme is fine because things can still vary and look how i want, but having art of xyz means i have to use them, what if the game i wanted to do doesn't permit for them? I think its good intentions but in the end hinders people
  • GnomerGnomer Member Posts: 292
    I would be very happy to join in if we were given a set date, then maybe emailed the characters and theme at say midnight at the start of the 24 hours :)
  • LumpAppsLumpApps Member Posts: 2,881
    @beefy. True, I thought about that but it also gives an extra challenge. If Brian wants to do this every month it could be something to try once perhaps.

    finally! another contest. I have been waiting forever for something like this. TOTB4 and all TOTBs are just too big, and impossible for someone as young as me to win. and, I dont really like Option 3, because then, it narrows the amount of people entering a little bit
    I like 1 and 4
  • LeonardDeveloperLeonardDeveloper Member Posts: 4,630
    @RKS
    Sounds great mate!, I actually know a few bits of HTML and personally have a hosting and word press account so lemme know if you need anything! :)
  • LeonardDeveloperLeonardDeveloper Member Posts: 4,630
    My suggestion is.... How. About no prizes.... Just a fun little contest
  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Member Posts: 5,394
    @LudwigHeijden - Oh yeh if its used like that every now and then it'll be cool, just if it was like that every time it would suck imo.

    Thanks everyone! @Redsky + @Beefy_Clyro etc.

    I like the idea of keeping it simple and fun :)
    Hey wait, wasn't that the idea for the original 24 hour challenge :P
