Marketplace items lacking!!!

Hi,
I have now bought two templates from the marketplace and in both cases found there is not so much as a README.
Sure there is a link to a video on youtube which tells you "you only need to change the graphics and sounds" but fails to say how or where.

Some basic info about HOW to change templates would be greatly appreciated. ... even some dimensions of the images would be good.

I did email the seller of one of the templates i bought asking for a run through of how it works so i could figure out how to changes it, only to be told that he wasn't going to spend a day writing up a document for a template....

I quite like gamesalad, but when people pay for things, isn't it fair to be able to ask for a little more than a beta version and no support on purchases?

This may sounds like a rant, but when we were looking at buying the full license, this is the kind of issue that means we wont bother.

Jez

You have support for everything you purchase from the marketplace , you can email the publisher and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help you .
Also if you have question you can always open a thread on the forums and lots of members will help you .

Now Jez , its obvious that you are new to GameSalad , so first of all WELCOME !
And second , i suggest you watch as many videos as you can about 'working with GS' to learn how to do things .
Personally i think you shouldn't have purchase templates if you are still learning the basics .
You can find lots of information in gamesalad cookbook on youtube and also at GShelper .

    +1 to pom and tshirt

Also you say you expect a little more then a beta version, but thats exactly what a template is. Its a starting point for you to base your own projects off, to learn how it works, add your graphics, ect. Its not a full game or anything like that.

For a analogy of my own. When you buy a car, they tell you how you turn on the radio, turn on the headlights and all that, but they dont teach you how to drive.

But yeah check out the links pom posted and youll be able to get the basics down in no time. Changing the image is as simple as dragging the image onto the actor when its open.

I think a better analogy would be Microsoft word where people produce templates where the text and faux images are layed out in a specific style but they don't teach you how to use Word only provide a layout for ease of use.

    + 1 to tshirtbooth !

    @jezjones

If you are struggling to work out how to change a picture then you are probably not at the stage where you should be buying templates, the same guy you bought the template from has made numerous very helpful videos covering all the basics (and he made them available, for free, to everyone) you're probably best to start with thoses videos before diving into modifying a working template, I know it can be frustrating at first, but even a few hours learning / research will make a world of difference, good luck!

We totally understand users have different skill levels and i think they will agree our customer service is 2nd to none, we get all sorts of questions and we always try and help.

If your going to provide a service make sure your prepared to help the end user if they get stuck.

We sell a lot of stuff so you can image the amount of questions we get asked from how do i change the image to things that frazzle our brains BUT we always help.

Thank you for all the responses.
To clear up some stuff, I have gone through all the videos on this site in the tutorials and in the cookbook.... I have points: 630, this was before getting any templates.

I don't think i am asking the earth here, a couple of paragraphs giving an overview of what is happening in a template is all i ask.... tshirtbooth I did not ask for a full write up but a short summary, which i actually wrote myself and sent to you... it took about 20 minutes including finding the information in the template.
Maybe offering this kind of thing would cut down on the number of emails asking support? I certainly don't want to email the creator of a template over changing the images. In this case it is 3 images that make for a tall moving screen so more than simply changing the main sprite images. A template file is a single file and clicking on the images inside has "show in finder" greyed out, the documentation says nothing of extracting images. Maybe add to the cookbook something about dealing with projects and altering things?

Also if you should only use templates when you are proficient, then how do you get proficient, if not by going through all the tutorials etc and then looking at a template to see how people put it all together. Picking apart a gamesalad project is not in any of the documentation and the nature of the way it is put together means that you have to go into actors and prototypes of actors that are spread across scenes and finding the right information can be difficult.

I appreciate you guys giving your point of view, and maybe templates are beta items, but I have come to gamesalad from a software development background, and it sounds like you guys are making a case for a lack of documentation. The car and word analogy don't stack up. When you buy a DVD player, they tell you how to use it, they don't put up a youtube video showing it's features and leave it at that.
If i write an application for a client and there is a fee involved, some documentation is expected, I am so wrong to expect it here?

Again thanks for the comments, but it really feels like i have been told i am just plain wrong to be asking for an overview of what a template does.

i dont see what the problem is to be honest. i bought one of tshirtbooth's template when i was a complete noob. i just opened it up and started altering settings and see how that affected the gameplay. through that you learn how to break and change everything in the template and as a nice side effect you learn how to use GS.

i feel the seller shouldnt have to provide customer support if they dont want to. i mean they're selling their templates in the marketplace to A) make some money out of it and B) help people out by providing the bare minimum code to achieve the type of game they want.

If you want to see an image as it seems you want to see the size of it. Click on the images tab and double click the image and it will open in apples preview program. Also, got to my site where I have an index for all videos on gamesalad on the web. http://gleesongroupmedia.com/gsguide/gsguide.html

As I said a template is not like a DVD player. The DVD player is GS creator and the template is a preformated burn disk. I guess though as we live in a free market society don't purchase from the vendor anymore. But I think you misunderstand the context of templates and none of the templates come with instructions even the free ones from Gamesalad directly as that is not the purpose of them. Learning gamesald is a constant thing, even for those who have worked with it for years. There are always new ways to assemble code as it's a giant puzzle.
