Hey GameSalad members,
I am a high school teacher for television broadcast, broadcast media and yearbook. I absolutely love the GameSalad platform and have been looking a the many tutorials offered by t-shirtbooth and some others. I am really wanting to employ the opportunity of learning GameSalad into our school system. There is nothing like it being taught presently and do not think it will be or the like for several years. I desperately am wanting to learn the software so I can teach it. I have the art work (self created) for four games, but after a year, am still lost at how to really get started (hardcore) into the software. My goal and hope is to offer this in the Fall of the 2012-2013 school year. Is there any real hope or potential "partners" in the Montgomery, Alabama area that may be able to lend a helping hand?

Not to be rude but after a year I would imagine you should know enough to teach some basic classes. If after a year you are unable to grasp the software I might rethink teaching it.

standard advice here … do the tutorials in the Cookbook links … watch videos … in your case: I recommend @tatiang ones:

he is a great teacher and these are the videos he uses in classes.

sometimes on our first adventures it is good to follow a complete how-to rather than attempt our own journey.
once you have the basics … you can make your own more easily … utilizing more specific videos/templates etc.
and the members of the Forum are all potential partners for lending a helping hand!

I would assume the same thing FryingBacon, but the main problem has been working two other jobs besides teaching. I have not had the dedicated time to do....but now I will be able to. Having the dedicated time for real concentration is the key, not just happy-go-lucky time. The videos I have seen are more so "off the cuff" instead of in an organized scenario. Now the time is not the issue, but the plan of exactly how to start, etc. Hope this makes more sense. And thanks Mother Hoose!!

Ah, now that you've cleared that up. You made it sound like you have been actively in the software for a year. As @motherhoose said those videos are more like lesson plans and tshirt has a new series that is great.

@FryGuy … I do think that @kculpepper was lost because he wanted to make 4 games in GS and had never made a game before in any language …

I think the hope to teach is a newer idea than just game making … and, GS is a good tool to teach in …
so now, the desire to learn is really motivated … not just making games … but learning the system well enough to teach!

a short while ago our Tshirtbooth wanted to set-up a mentoring program … alas the complications that followed that great idea!

so @kculpepper … if you like, I will mentor you for 1 month … but, bear in mind, I teach with whips and chains
email me at gmail if you are interested in learning tough!

ah TSB … I couldn't teach you anything about GS … nor probably about whips and chains! =))

but, wouldn't mind being "mentored" by you for one day!

Your offer MotherHoose is more than "above and beyond" and will jump at the chance. I never expected anything like this. Your offer is more than generous.
I presently teach two online classes at night - Mondays and Wednesday nights, besides my everyday high school teaching job, and I am in the central time zone. What would have in mind to accomplish this task?
And thanks again!!! Is the address motherhoose at gmail?

all email … all basically: Show & Tell

as you are older than some newbies: I'll ask you to do things and …
you'll Show me with screenShots/projects and Tell me via email

the Whips come out when you tell me "I already know how to do that!"
the Chains are what will lock you to that level of learning … when you don't have anything to Show me.

you progress when you avoid Whips and break the Chains that will bind you if you ignore my orders to do things!

  • While everyone is on the subject of tutorials and mentoring.. over the last 2 years I have watched everything tshirtbooth has put up on youtube. kculpepper I highly recommend watching all the tutorials he has put up, they helped us get the confidence to apply all his little tricks and clever coding to allow for minimal resources to be used. They definitely get you making your own little ideas in no time!

Oh and tshirtbooth if you ever do end up sorting out any classes/tutorial style stuff im very interested.
Im not sure if you get a heap of emails requesting you to make specific youtube tutorials but I have a few things im keen on learning how to do, im not a noob when it comes to gamesalad with 2 years dev now but let me know if your interested.
