didn't want to spend 30 minutes … so I thought I'd just take a peak… and was riveted and replayed it! … did again on youTube! I'd cried and I got angry … and passed the link on to 30 people … hopefully all GS members will feel the same!
Read some interesting things today about the Invisible Children charity, seems that like most charities they have quite a few critics but the main message for me was to spread the story and hopefully put pressure on governments to intervene and help these poor children.
Some things to consider about Kony...from "TheDailyWh.at" "The organization behind Kony 2012 — Invisible Children Inc. — is an extremely shady nonprofit that has been called ”misleading,” “naive,” and “dangerous” by a Yale political science professor, and has been accused by Foreign Affairs of “manipulat[ing] facts for strategic purposes.” They have also been criticized by the Better Business Bureau for refusing to provide information necessary to determine if IC meets the Bureau’s standards.
Additionally, IC has a low two-star rating in accountability from Charity Navigator because they won’t let their financials be independently audited. That’s not a good thing. In fact, it’s a very bad thing, and should make you immediately pause and reflect on where the money you’re sending them is going.
By IC’s own admission, only 31% of all the funds they receive go toward actually helping anyone [pdf]. The rest go to line the pockets of the three people in charge of the organization, to pay for their travel expenses (over $1 million in the last year alone) and to fund their filmmaking business (also over a million) — which is quite an effective way to make more money, as clearly illustrated by the fact that so many can’t seem to stop forwarding their well-engineered emotional blackmail to everyone they’ve ever known."
Still, I don't have the money to donate to all the deserving charities … but I can add my voice to this powerful message.
even charities like Susan Komen have problems … with financial mismanagement having worked for the Red Cross … you don't want the details of how they waste donations on the high ranking staff…
thanks for posting this .... maybe sending them money isn't the best idea but spreading the word could have an amazing effect. I saw it mentioned on cnn.com this morning and I hadn't heard of Kony before this ... who knows maybe people power might work, would be awesome.

It's a shame, but this has taken on a "fad" persona. The company in question is definitely shady in their dealings, but the person they are exposing is an absolute monster. Although I read that this person was chased out of Uganda already, and hasn't been active since 2006 if he isn't dead already.
It's gone viral on Facebook/Twitter/youtube, and it's the hip thing to be into right now, but unfortunately, changing your Facebook status isn't going to change anything. There are literally hundreds of warlords in this part of Africa, and this guy was but a small player in a big field. There are many other active warlords there now that are actually doing worse things. Kony isn't even there anymore.
These "Invisible Children" people are playing off your sympathies, because who in their right mind would say anything contradicting to a monster and his actions like this? If you did, you would be a heartless bastard. And just look at their name…"Invisible Children" how can you hate against a company that has children in their name? I believe it to be somewhat of a scam. They are using this monster, and the crimes against humanity he has committed, to play on your sympathies, and send them money. And there are hundreds of more warlords just like him still in Uganda, today. Hundreds!
but, if Kony is still at large … I want to make him well known so he can't hide!
we do not have to contribute to Invisible Children and we do not have to totally support them … but, we should all be aware of the monsters and give them lots of hassle! our world has enough natural disasters to terrify us … we do not need inhumane characters terrifying us!
I guess it would be best if we don't get into extending to much time debating the pros and cons of this issue as I think both sides have had a little airing of the issues and thus any GSer reading this can see the video (one) side and read the other side links.
In this complex world there are always may sides .... US thinks the UN wastes aid, the Red Cross has been accused of top heavy administration, aid has gone to Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi etc, etc ... after major disasters food and aid is often dropped into effected zones where much goes to waste and is spoiled. The alternative is to do nothing.
In the case of Kony, the US thought enough of the issue to deploy advisers recently, Kony is one of the worlds most wanted ... in comparison people and organizations still spend considerable time, effort and money pursuing Nazi war criminals ... so that fact Knoy's location has changed and his effect is presently marginalized doesn't matter to me. I say personally .. no money for this organization, but I will help spread the word ... if ( a big IF) Knoy's name becoming as famous as the Kardasion's leads to his capture I say great, whose next!
I feel someone should make some art. GameSalad is growing, and we have a lot of good computer artists, maybe some people could take a shot at this. KONY SUCKS
The CEO of their company made a vid to combat the criticism. He says they are transparent in their financial reports. You can read what they publish in public here: http://www.invisiblechildren.com/financials.html
Apart from anything else those guys are excellent film makers.
I was looking for on online clip of Bill Gates giving his opinion on Invisible Children. Didn't find much except this from his twitter page:
I'm not sure why this Kony thing is suddenly such a huge deal. More like a lot of people waking up to the bad smell of the horrors of humanity a bit late. This has been going on forever and there have been documentaries/reports on European channels covering the child armies of Africa as long as I can remember. Anyone recall the Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga? One goes out, another replaces him. It's not just Africa. Philippines, Mexico, Columbia, Iraq, Afghanistan, India, Nepal , Thailand , Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and even Israel occupied Palestinian territories.
Sad truth is that no one will care until there is something to profit from in that region. I'm not saying the film's message is not important, but where the heck has everyone been all these years?
Agree with a lot of what you said there, its sad that it takes a premium film to be put together to wake people up to the tragedies. My main problem is that it seems that very few charities can be trusted with the money!

But if the main peeps at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation support them then they can't be all that bad.
