Question about the circle collision shape

Hey guys. If you apply the circle collision shape to a rectangular object, where/how is the circle defined?
I have a rectangular actor I'm experimenting with. When its collision type is 'rectangle', it collides with walls exactly as I would expect. If I change to circle (which I tried to see if this would help it 'slide' around sharp corners), I thought maybe the collision circle would actually be an oval stretching to the extents of the width and height. But it seems to be just a circle in the middle of the object - the rectangle can now overlap walls on the left and right sides without colliding with them.
