Do note that GS handles 'sound' and 'music' differently. When you import as 'sound', it'll come in as .ogg and you can play multiple sounds as the same time. When you import as 'music', it'll come in as .m4a and only one music track can play as a time. Volume for both sounds and music can be controlled independently.
As synthesis mentioned, searching the forums is a good way to go. In case you didn't know, the magnifying glass at the top right corner allows you to start searches (like in a Mac OS, the Spotlight feature)

GS will process them automatically on import into a .ogg file.

We are using mp3 and caf files on import.
So far...wav files appear to be party crashers.
Keep things small!
