Creating Your Own Sprites

Currently I am using an online program called Sumopaint to create and draw my sprites, however I have two questions.
1. Is there a more effective way of drawing my own characters and all?
2. Is there a way to remove the background of an image so that when I paste the image into GS it doesn't have a blob of white with it?

I have heard a lot of good artists out there using sumo paint. I am using inkscape and gimp myself. The only way you could be more effective with drawing characters is to pay someone else to do it. As for your background situation, you want to save the image as a .png. this will get rid of the background.

    Hope this helps
