edited April 2012 in Working with GS (Mac)
1 week into GS:it is April 14 and I wanted to start this thread to help all of the future GS users. As a way of giving back, since everyone here is so helpful. This is the only way I can think of to give back at the moment. ( the reason why I started this thread is because as time passes my memory the challenges I encounter will fade so best to note them here)

- my first is the screen size, when changing the size of the background, you need to go to to the scene and change the size there. I know is so simple but i wasted about 30 min figuring this one out. :)

-watching the game design video by GS team member is very helpful to get a over view of the thought process. ( I come from neither a programming background nor graphic , call me mr. know nothing) link :

( I will update more) btw. pls excuse grammar and spelling.

When I was in the planning stage of my app, I always got caught up on the "is it real" aspect of the concept. Its tough to grasp the concept of "forget about if its possible in the real world" and just do it...if that makes sense lol

Probably the most confusing thing for me was that I kept unlocking prototypes and editing instance rules and then expecting my actors to follow the prototype rules. I had no idea what an instance was or was for initially.

Also, videos > forum posts. As helpful as some of our posts can be, if you're new it really helps to see someone going through the motions while explaining it.

    Hi thanks for the replies.
@tataiang- what do u mean by video>forum posts? I cant find it

@benkhun21 - I think he is saying making a video is better then having a forum post about it. You can explain how to play, and people pick it up easier.

yeah, I plan to do that once I get more knowledgeable about GS. Also eng is my second language so my accent is terrible, ppl would hate it. :)

The other benefit is text is searchable, so if someone in the future were to have similar issues they can find this thread.

    Update:
    - There is more than one way to do things. If one method is frustrating you because you can seem to get it to work, take a break and come back and try another method. I know easier say than done, but try it out. I was working on creating a shield with one actor today, I know something incredibly simple for you pros..anyway, I was going at it one way and took a hr, but can seen to get it to work the way I want with all the hp and all associated, so I took a break and came back to it using a different way. works perfectly.

-also I was going about installing the viewer and so ofc I went to watch Tshirtbooth s video on it, and the part about the apple ios provisioning is require, it is something that is not available until u sign up for the apple developer acct, so dont waste a bunch of time looking for the link, it s not there. I dont know what the rules are for linking out, but other ppl are having the same issue..here .. http://www.iphonedevsdk.com/forum/iphone-sdk-development/82411-iphone-provisioning-portal-link.html

mod: if u need to remove link, pls do so.

-productivity : i get distracted and play games, watch GS training videos. so I went to the apple store and downloaded a free timer app. Now I set it to 30 min and work straight for 30 min at a time. so at least I know I am getting something down, rather then wasting hrs.

    will update soon.

-I spent the last three days getting the resource collection based on device time to work by using the clock template that is provided by GS. What I discovered is you can use the flower in scene two to get a accurate device time/ load/save. So if anyone is trying to figure that out that is where to go. Look at the flower.

-I got the GS viewer to work. It was a rather painless process. The apple developer provisioning part , you have to sign up with an apple developer acct ($99) - If you havent this section is not open for you and you will search for the provisioning link and NOT find it. Once you make the payment it will be there in less than 24hrs.

-The save /load attribute features works perfectly in the GS viewer. You can clear previous version of your game from the GS viewer so you dont get confused which version of your game you are test. Remember to change the find name before you upload the newer one.

-I am currently working on getting the enemy character to work correctly in my game.
If your actors are acting weird and following u like mine were look under scene -->layout..make sure they are not classfied as HUD.. just drag them to the game section

-also my enemy actor where disappearing after the first one gets hit. The problem was I had a global attribute for the hit points. It is much better and correct to go into the actor and create a actor based attribute. This way when a new actor is spawn it will have full hp.

That s all for now. I will update soon. Gl w your game dev. :)

5/19 I had to take a trip so I was forced to put my game development journey on hold for a month. But I am back now and feeling good. So I will continue updating this thread.
