iphone resolution independence

I have turned off the resolution independence check box and my game still up sizes to retina display and still down sizes to iphone 3g, seems to work the same without it checked. Except my app file is now 25% smaller. Is there any advantage to leaving resolution independence turned on? Is this an old outdated function? Does the 3g do this automatically anyway?

all my .png files are set for retina.

just a ques - did you test using iphone 4+?

Tested both on 4 and 3. it is clean on 4 as expected and correctly lower rez on 3.
