iPhone resolution independence

I have turned off the resolution independence check box and my game still up sizes to retina display and still down sizes to iphone 3g, seems to work the same without it checked. Except my app file is now 25% smaller. Is there any advantage to leaving resolution independence turned on? Is this an old outdated function? Does the 3g do this automatically anyway?

all my .png files are set for retina.

I understand that. My project was built that way. Then before publishing I shut off RI. It works the same as when its on, but my app is 25% smaller.

it seems like the phone is doing this automatically from the larger files, and there is no need to have GS add these extra files to the app.

Thanks. That clears it up for me. The level loading also seems the same with and without. I guess I thought it would take much longer to load if it was using the retina pngs on the 3g
