Image Blur for Slot Machine effect

I am polishing off a slot machine type game and have DeepBlueApps great template as a guide. In it, it has the images blurred which gives the effect of the slots spinning. I have tried a few different photoshop effects but mine pale in comparison. Any ideas of the steps and effects I should apply to get his looking great? Thanks for any pointers!

    I haven't seen the effect but perhaps using the motion blur like mentioned before and then use the eraser with a large brush with soft edges to erase the unwanted part of the blur is an option.
    You could make a copy of the layer and have a motion blur with less strength on top of the first and again erase the unwanted parts for a stronger effect.

    Hope that makes sence.

    @simo103 - something like this:
    image

    @LudeigHeijden - that's the way I would do it... I am not even sure what template it is (I know I have done a few slotmachines in my time)...

    The above sample has the original image, then the motion blur, and then the erased blur with lowered transparency and the original shape put ontop with it's top erased off with a big, soft eraser.

    I haven't seen the template but I guess you've tried motion blur rather than a general blur? That would be my first step, FILTER>BLUR>MOTION BLUR and then choose either 90 or -90 degrees for a vertical blur? I guess the blur distance would technically adjust depending on how fast the slots are spining, but that could require various images with different blur distances for the differening slot speeds.

    @ooi .. thanks for that I will try some more attempts. I was also thinking there was a special way to make it look like it is spinning in one direction .. ie: is there a blur setting/opacity effect that should be used? Perhaps the main center image is blurred a bit then a copy shifted down a bit and blurred some more etc. It appears to be a very fine adjustment but makes the world of difference in its effect. @SpriteAttack ... I'm guessing the effect might be yours in DeepBlues template ... any chance you'd have a second or two to give me a few tips? or certainly anyone else who knows.

    I see the problem - motion blur affects the blur in both directions - whereas you want it to only blur on one side, like a motion trail. It doesn't look like any of the built in blur settings do this. A quick google shows a lot of people moaning about Photoshop not being able to do this, so I guess it would be something along the lines of what you have posted, and a lot of trial and error. Unless of course like you said the person who originally made the artwork can let you know. Good luck!

    Edit: You might find that with the method of copy shifting you mentioned, it might be more effective to adjust the opacity of each copy rather than blur it, as a lot of blurred layers may quickly become too blurred when stacked, losing the effect.

    You could have a pop-up box come up telling users to shake their head up and down really quickly when they press the Spin button?

    It will have been Chris that did the images if it's a DBA template, so I'm sure he'll chime in when he comes on.

    @mynameisace haha that definitley can't go wrong!

    Just another thought though, if the graphics are made from different layers you could add the motion blur, which will effect both sides, and then add a mask to one side. Bit of a work around but it would probably work.

    @mynameisace ... a user controlling behavior would be great in GS? First up would have to be the 'push inApp purchase button repeatedly', followed by 'leave 5 star review' and 'tell all your friends'. Screw making a great game, those 3 behaviors alone would be enough :D
    @ooi ... that's a great idea .. will give it a try.

    @EatingMyHat ... I based it off their free stripped down version in their Resource Center.

    @simo103 ok, was not aware of that one. Now you got me curious to see how they did their effect.

    @LudwigHeijden ... thanks for that ... I found a youtube clip that kind of suggested the same .. it was for making motion in a skateboard image so wasn't quite the same but erasing parts with a brush was the technique used. I will keep trying and post if I get it looking right.
