basically i want to create a "try before you buy" game. so I'm not sure which route to go.

1) 10 free levels, if you like the game then you can unlock the remanding 50 levels for 0.99 (with survival modes as well)

or

2) 20 free levels, if you like the game then you can unlock the remanding 40 levels for 0.99 (with survival modes as well)

survival modes will be included in both. along with leader boards. levels aren't EASY PEASY. they have some challenges. its fun. but i don't wanna give took ugh away.

at first option 2 was my route, but then option 1 made more sense.

both include free updates too.

what do you guys think?

well... you are asking if giving away 10 is more generous than 20 or the other way around??? ;)

I think the answer is clear.

Completely depends on the difficulty curve of the game. If I could complete 20 levels in half an hour, then it's giving away enough, if it would take me 6 hours to complete 10 levels, then your giving away too much. Hard to gauge without playing the game. Ask beta testers what they think.

    True true.

I have 2 beta testers. One loves the game and says some levels are easier than others, but overall a great balance. Better than angry birds he says. then again many games are better than angry birds.

The second beta tester happens to be my wife. Shes a puzzle gamer. My game is more action puzzle. Arcade at best. In other words, she says it's great but too difficult FOR HER. So that's understandable.

I feel 20 levels is generous but it might be too much for free. I could be wrong. I just don't want the potential buyers/gamers/consumers to tell themselves "well those twenty levels were fun, but that's enough"

Maybe if my game is good enough, it won't matter, people will want more?

Maybe I did answer my own question.

    Any more ideas?

I would say that whatever would take an average beginner 30 minutes of gameplay would be perfect.

Sorry guys, all comments are true, but there is no way EVER that 10 will be more generous than 20 :)

Regardless of the number of levels that you choose, they have to be amazing and perfect so people will be begging for more. It is very hard to create attractive content for IAP.

Make sure that you are not only unlocking level, add achievements, perks (stickers, medals...), new stuff (new bird/ball/gun) and so on.

That's the thing. It Gould take more than 30 minutes. It's a challenging game :)

    @eatingmyhat

What do hats taste like? ;p

Yea that's the idea. I will have 40 more levels and 1 survival mode.

If I were you I would do only 10 levels. You want the buyer's impulse, and if they aren't excited about your game at 10 levels, they aren't going to be after they have played 20 levels. If you give out 20 free levels than some people may get bored by then whereas they would have had the urge to buy the game after playing 10 levels.

This is exactly what I was trying to explain. Buyer impulse and bore was and right strategy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not Trying to scam consumers. I just want them to have the appropiate amount is sampling :)

    Thanks guys.

I just want to say that I would never do a free game with iap unlock, I would never buy a game like that (maybe the free version but never upgrade).
