Any suggestions as to any great websites, royalty free or not for video game music and effects?

I use Sony Cinescore, it's a crappy old version but works ok for generating music if you are not skilled enough to do so.

Also have some sound effects CD's with booms, squeaks, clicks, buzzers etc

I do a little crude chopping and editing using Audacity.

Ktfright I'd be really interested in seeing what music you can create?

Can you do a moody, deep space, spooky, rumbling style music?

I'll post a link for the music I make for games very soon. I'm a rapper, and I sometimes have to make my own music, so that's one problem in game design that I don't have to worry about that much.

@Toby, yeah, I could try to do one like that.

Ktfright, I'd also be very interested in seeing some of your music as well :)

The trouble I'm having is finding sound effects that are free on websites, if anyone has any suggestions, or where to perhaps, pick up a sound effects cd that would be great

I'm looking for things like rain effects, wind effects, shooting sounds, etc

Or are there any programs where you can make your own? Toby, where did you pick up your sound effects cd from?

    Thanks!

Purchased my SFX CD off ebay second hand. It's called 'Sound Ideas - 8000 Sci Fi Sound Effects Library' it's good, cost me nearly $300 but worth it.

I just finished a website that has all my royalty-free music available here, http://www.jonnyaudio.com
You can also request new music and sfx through the website and then purchase them at royalty-free prices

try http://www.freesound.org. if you take sounds from this site and use something like audacity (a free sound editor) you can chop up the files you download from http://www.freesound.org to make them work for your own projects

    what's cookin,

just thought i'd add some links to this thread. this could become a wiki list i suppose.

this is a combination of free sites, paid sites with free samples, and paid sites with decent quality. of course, this is not a comprehensive listing. just something to get started with, if others want to add to this resource.

    Hey everyone,

I posted this info in another thread, before I saw this one, but I'll post it here too. Two great audio resources I use are

CXFR - This is the mac version of SFXR which is a simple synthesizer that you can use to make simple sound effects. Useful for that retro feel, but also great for placeholder until you find something more to your liking. (http://thirdcog.eu/apps/cfxr)

Hobnox Audio Tool - Tis is a Flash App that allows you to compose your own electronic music using built in drum machines, synths, and sequencers. It also has some great filters, including, reverb, pitch delay, bitcrusher, and a cool interface. You can save out your composition as a file (you need to register, but its free) and then you can use Audacity to adjust the file format to your liking. This is a great resource for original, royalty free music, that you composed yourself.
(www.hobnox.com - click on the Audio tool link at the bottom left.)

CXFR is AWESOME!!! (http://thirdcog.eu/apps/cfxr) Great for creating unique and custom sound effects. The auto-feature is a time saver. I used this for all my sound effects for StarFire.

More love from CXFR here - I can see myself using it quite a bit for spot effects :)

do you guys use audacity to convert to ogg?
  • quantumsheepquantumsheep Member Posts: 8,188
I do - helps get it into Mono...

Essentially, split the stereo track, set each one to Mono and then export as ogg

    Hope that helps ;)
