Does anyone know the copyright issues involved in making a video game or tip and tricks type app? Do you have to contact the game company?

Just call it the "unofficial guide to XXX", and it will be fine. And don't use trademarks (like logos), or graphics from the game. Self-made screenshots will be ok.
