I just saw your video on youtube with another company (corona) and liked your concept of making a platform that lets people that are more graphics based (photoshop, etc.) able to create games... You didn't mention anything about having to have an Apple computer to do this! I was just given the new iPad and thought I could use it to download gamesalad to start making games to sell... but you don't offer that either? If you want to really let more non-programmers in, please make your system work like corona+gumbo (on the pc!) or at least on the new iPad! I'm now stuck - I can't shell-out $1000 for a mac... and think your system is the best option... Help!

Well GameSalad IS the best option - but you must have a Mac to develop for iOS.

how about making an app to create games on the new $600 iPad my sister gave me? That's what got me into the idea of creating games for the iphone and ipad... I even have a keyboard for it? Since it's all graphics based, couldn't I just make the game on the iPad and submit it to the app store?

That's an amazing idea! You should make a software like this! :)

I meant... Could GS PLEASE make it their program work on the new (more powerful) ipad? That way, we non-mac people could join-in the fun of creating games for the ipad and iphone?

EVEN if GS is available for your microwave, or fridge, you will still need Mac to publish your game.

I don't even know what Xcode is... What if we did everything on the ipad and then were able to send it to a friends mac to publish? Or how about having a windows version (like corona) and then have it sent to a friend with a windows machine to publish (even better for me)? - In general, I think GS is simply not interested in what they claim: To reach all the people that aren't programmers... I hope this attitude changes. In the mean time, what is the cheapest used laptop I can buy on ebay (what model and operating system) would you recommend to run gamesalad?

It's hard to understand how you arrived at this mistaken conclusion:
    http://arcade.gamesalad.com/download/latestCreator

Clearly states that it's a Mac application.
Plus, this is not a "GS restriction" at all... you can't install Xcode on anything but a Mac.

You can't send your game to App Store or Mac App Store if you don't have Mac computer with Xcode. The only other way is something like this: you make a game on your iPad (if this would be possible), and send project file to your friend with Mac computer (but you need to give him your Developer password), and he would send your game.

BTW, do you now that you need Apple Dev Account for 99 USD/year?

Welcome to the forums and to GameSalad. I think you'll find that you're making assumptions that aren't supported by evidence. Obviously, you're going to find a biased community here, but just a few things for your consideration:

    1. Someone already provided a suggestion about a MacMini as a cheaper alternative to a full-blown Mac system. Yes, you can purchase a used laptop to run GameSalad provided it's a Mac and it meets or exceeds the system requirements (http://arcade.gamesalad.com/products).

    2. Plenty of "non-programmers" use GameSalad. I teach Game Design classes to students from 8-14 years of age and they excel at using it. But we use Macintosh computers (iMacs and MacBook Pros) because that's what Apple requires. Apple does not currently support app design and submission (publishing) on iPads or iPhones. And while an iPad version sounds like a cool idea, it's simply not in existence yet. Although I use GameSalad quite a bit on a MacBook, I prefer a larger screen when I'm working. The idea of moving to a smaller screen (iPad) seems less useful.

    3. GameSalad provides forums that are quite helpful to people of all skill levels. There are members who give freely of their time to create templates/demos and tutorial videos in plain English. As an IT professional, I have not seen forums as useful or generous as these to the general public.

If you have more questions about what GameSalad can or cannot do, please feel free to ask, but making assumptions without knowing more about the software and the company is going to make it less likely for people here to want to help you.

    @GeorgeLewis

GameSalad has never ever even hinted at a gamesalad application for the iPad. Game Creation for everyone does not mean you will not have to make some sort of investment on your own. They provide one of the best SDK's available at no cost to Everyone. making games is a business. to run a business you have to invest some money to have the right tools for your business. Your iPad was given to you. You didn't go out an drop $600 on a new iPad cause you thought you could make games on it. You had an iPad given to you and then got the idea GameSalad might work. In the end it sounds like you have a lot of research to do about game development before you even invest in a mac cause it sounds like you are young and had this idea on a whim.

You really need to research what is required before you dive in head first and realize you forgot to fill the pool up with water.

You should be grateful you've got a cool new ipad and enjoy that. Use it for research and then decide if you can commit to what is required for game development.

I'm not a kid (an assumption) I'm simply someone who never had a mac and because i was given a gorgeous iPad, i thought i'd like to make some games and animated childrens books. I went to YouTube and saw a Google discussion where they were comparing 3 game developer companies... yours, corona and one other (that was for flash programers)... Well, I assumed (incorrectly) that they were all available to develop on pc (like I heard corona is)...

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'm made many websites in html (using simply a text editor) and I assumed programming games was like that too...

I'll be looking for a use mac as per your suggestions (thanks) and I'll also be trying out several other programs - like the ipad game maker (codea) which looks interesting...

I hope you take newbie iPad users more seriously... I meant no disrespect and just wanted to be able to use your great visual game maker (I have over 100 beautiful pieces of unique art from my mother that I want to turn into childrens books (you can see a sample at my site: http://StoriesAndpuzzles.com

I was in marketing for over 20 years, and think you really need to rethink making a version of your site for the iPad. That's my 2cents...

Doing development on an iPad might look like fun, but it is harder than it looks without specifically designing the tool for an iPad. I sometimes worked on GS from my iPad (using a remote control software) - it is ok for small things, not to create a full game with it.

Having said that, I'm sure someone will try and succeed... question is if it is a productive way to do it ;)

I don't think you quite understand what people are telling you here man. You need a Mac computer to publish apps via Xcode , even the process of getting your Xcode certificates is going to be some work. GameSalad can't do anything about this.

This is my first post here (I think...), and just wanted to comment on this. I stumbled across someone talking about Gamesalad and fell in love with the idea of creating an ipad game...something I've always been interested in since the days of programming on my Commodore 64 back in the day. However, I never really took to programming, always wanted something more graphically based (as that was much more my style). I experimented with Deluxe Paint on the Amiga and loved creating 2d digital art...and then everything moved to 3D.

Move forwards in time, years of neglecting my creative style (briefly played with Klik and Play a few years back but ultimately found it too lacking to create what I wanted)..and then here is Gamesalad. And the ipad is bringing back the glory days of 2d again. Everything was falling into place, I became very excited, went to download Gamesalad and realised it was Mac only....I then realised that if I realistically wanted to be able to create something for the ipad then I would need a mac having always been a PC user.

Move forward a couple of months, got myself a mac mini to start out without breaking the bank...I LOVE IT, now teaching myself Gamesalad, Photoshop and animation...throwing myself into all aspects and loving it. I have a LOT to learn, but the whole thing is so rewarding it was certainly worth the investment...now onwards and upwards creating my first game :) (it could take a while lol).

Anyway, the moral of the story is...GET YOURSELF A MAC :)

While all of those Other SDKs run on Windows none of them can publish any Mac or iOS projects without a mac. So if your planning to make anything for Apple devices then any of them will require a mac.

Sorry for implying your a kid. You must understand how many "entitled" children who come to this forum expecting the world to be handed to them on a silver platter and some of your comments gave that impression. Again Sorry for that and Welcome to this community. While your waiting for a mac take the time to start watching the loads and loads of tutorial videos out there and just start absorbing how it all works.

    Cheers

at the state where we're at, serious game development still happens on the desktop/laptop. There's one iPad app called "Codea" which lets you design games. I'm not sure how well it's doing, but it's a very interesting concept.

@GeorgeLewis The artwork is lovely. What a treasure for you to work with. A few people have worked with GameSalad to create eBooks but it's not necessarily easy to do. That is, making an eBook is not hard, but making one that has certain features, or animated page turning, or things like that can be more difficult. If you search the forums, you can see some examples and some suggestions for creating them.

You will always have the 'hurdle' of x-code and the whole Mac 'being in control' thing to contend with if you want to publish on iTunes or the Mac App store. Try AppInventor if you want to make and publish games without these restrictions. It runs on both Mac and PC and - while not being anything like as clever as GameSalad it will give you the opportunity to at least see your game up there on the Android platform. I have used it to 'try out' ideas before refining them for the iTunes store.
